Whatever it is, it was stuck to my drain plug when I went to change the oil today! It is small and metallic, about the 3/4" long.

It's just the killer dowel pin... ..... don't worry about it :D :D it made it by. lololol... ..... just a wild guess

It is exactly 5/8" long and 3/8" wide in the middle. The ends taper down a little. It has a lot of little cuts in it like it was knocked around.

So what do i do about it?

OH MY GOSH! I'm SOO glad I neutralized my KDP last week! :--)

After seeing your picture, I don't think I could drive my truck knowing it could fall out and destroy the motor at any minute. You are lucky if it did no damage!

I know there is a lot of talk about the KDP, but what exactly is it, what does it do, and where [was] is located?

What checks should I do for damage?

The pin itself only has small knicks and appears to only have taken a minor beating. My engine is running strong as ever and there are no new noises.

You can HOPE it didn't cause any damage on the way thru. I would be checking the housing on the front of the engine for and signs of damage and new oil leaks. If the cam gear and nose falls off some time you will know what the cause was.

You should get a better close up of the pin with the marks on it and something for reference and post it with a big red flashing OUCH. The next self proclaimed diesel tech thats "never heard or seen a problem" with the KDP can get a good look at what doesn't happen.

Having seen this picture, I am glad that I did the jig fix this year. Just hoping that there is no internal damage involved from that thing bouncing around going down. You might check the timing cover closely for small cracks. Other than this, you are very lucky. This should prove the ist. gen. trucks are not exempt from this.

WOW, You're very lucky. Also, don't let people tell you that the engine timing cover case bolts are okay also. They vibrated out and destroyed my engine. I can't believe this engine is running though, with teh KDP coming out and going through the engine.
