with the axle end of my track bar off... can't get the ball joint end off. the nut is off. i am using a prybar, heavy brass mallet. . i've smacked the frame side of the joint, the trackbar side and it isn't falling out!! i HAVE to get it out today! preferably before dark... .

the wife suggested i post this as she now knows who the guys on the TDR are...

she laughs when i say PUMPERDUDE or ILLFLEM... .

thanks. scott

If you'not gonna reuse it,just Get a couple of good licks on the threaded end. Should pop out. Get mad,it helps. CYA

guys,

i'm whacking the **** out of the end of the bolt from above. big brass mallet with a steel pipe sitting on the end of the bolt. what more can i do?

thanks

scott.

ok, i went and bought a pitman arm puller. i'm not sure if they are suppose to fit but the one i bought did not even come close. i looks as if the frame bracket was way too big for the puller. so... ... it is now dark. i'm hosed. i do have a work light and i am in florida... good. but, the bugs are bad.

i just need some encouragement.

Scott, check your PM box. I replied before I saw this. If you need anymore info or encouragement let me know. Keep going, every little bit is a bit closer to being done!!

I have had trouble with tie rod ends in the past and found that if i lay a 4 to 6 pound hammer head on the top of the threads ( just the weight of the hammer, no swinging), and tap the side of the arm the tie rod goes through it usually falls out pretty easy. This sounds like a bunch of hooey, but I have hammered my brains out with a bif hammer to find they just fall out this way. Its worth a try.

If the shaft goes through a tapered hole whack the side of the piece where the hole is not the threaded part. 4-5 good whacks gets it off every time.

gets it off every time for you... ...

sorry man.

i just laid on my back while whacking in the driveway about 40-50 times. each side/top of bolt/frame piece

i will try a pickle fork tomorrw.

thanks. scott.

Scott - is the other end of the trackbar already disconnected at the axle?? The ball joint end of mine was not coming off either until I diconnected the end at the axle... .

The other thing you might want to try is rocking the steering wheel back and forth a little... .

Good luck

With the other end already off, you could put some sort of fulcrum (2x4, hammer head, etc) down by the end you are working on and jack, pry wedge the other end up, then go back to hammering on the still attached end. Does one of your neighbors have a torch? If you heat the boss where the trackbar tapers into it. Just heat in one spot and then go back to pounding. Any way you could apply some steady pressure "out" while pounding should diminish the pounding time.

tore up the boot. added propane torch heat - lots. jammed a pickle fork in and pounded the !@#$ out of it.

it was the heat.

back to napa for a new boot.

thanks for all of the help.

scott.

Bet the neighbors are glad all that racket stopped. Wonder why yours was so tuff? Glad you got it. To bad DC didnt build it right the first time. OH well. The things we put up with to have a Cummins. ;)
