I reciently purchaced a 1994 2500 4x4, single cab, long bed, auto trans. its got a few upgrades here and there. On a 400 ish mile trip over this 4th of july weekend it was running great. We did around 150mi. on pavement the first day, around 50mi. on dirt the next and she was still running great. On the last day i started her up to let her warm up (as i always do... ) and we drove away from the camp sight i noticed it was shifting funny. When we got on the freeway and got up to freeway speed i looked at the tach and it was pushing 2500 rpm. i pulled over and took off again and the same thing. so i found out that its not shifting into overdrive. ANY IDEAS?? fluid=full

If the trans is hot, I think it won't go to OD .

Is it starting off in 1st?

Any chance you knocked anything off of it off roading? ( the computer puts it in OD and lock-up)

At worst, you can unhook both batteries for 20 minutes, re-connect them to see if it was a code. ( this may reset the codes)

my trans gauge never went over 180. i dont think thats to high, since i've seen my shop truck get over 280... (pos dura-trash) i also dis connected the battery for 10 minutes but i will try it for 20... any other ideas??

The transmission won't go to overdrive until the oil heats up to (I think) 135. That should not be a problem, a few miles does that for me in the winter. Did you check the dash overdrive button. Did you turn it off while on the dirt and forget to turn it on again? Just above the radio on left side of cup holder if I remember.

well the torque converter locks up in 3rd gear. the tps is working, as per the specs from genos garauge. its also not the trans temp sensor, or the speed sensor on the tail shaft of the transfer case. (replaced those today) i really dont think its the trans. , because one it was rebuilt reciently, and two because it went into overdrive a few times on my trip home. but it wouldnt stay, and it also felt like it was slipping when it was in overdrive. any more ideas?? thanks

now even bigger problems. asside from not having any overdrive the truck does not start. it cranks over starts for a few seconds, then immediatly dies. one of the three wires (the three that go to the transmission, 1 being pin 54 from the pcm, for locking and unlocking the torque converter) shorted out and that leades me to where i am now... any ideas??

yeah if your truck is not starting then you have a fuel problem..... check your filter... mine did the same thing when the filter was bad... . I also changed it and man it was a whole diffrent beast... .

I think he's already solved his problem edgeman. Something about shorted out wiring. He started this post in about 3 different places.

If it starts ans immediately dies it is probably the fuel shutoff relay. Throttle position sensor can keep it from shifting right. I drilled a hole in mine and washed it out with contact cleaner 5 years ago and it has shifted fine since

This happened to my old 01' awhile back. Had just past 200k on it, lost overdrive. Turned out to be a wiring harness inside the transmission {one that runs along and connects to the valve body} turns out it detiorates over time, and a transducer and solenoid. Starting problem is likely the fuel shutoff solenoid. If you get it running I would not drive much till you get it fixed as you stand to damage the transmission more. I would call Bill K. he can probably suggest someone in your area that can check it out for you.

OK, I'm just talking through my hat here. Never had this problem but how does this sound? When you go to start it the fuel shut-off is lifted by the heavy amp relay, when you let the key go from start to run the smaller amp relay holds it up. Maybe the hold relay has gone bad.
