Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) HELP Transfer case leaking

It looks like the front seal on my transfer case is leaking... Has anyone had this problem before and how hard is it to just drop the transfer case and replace the seal?

Mine is currently leaking right now... ... since I don't have the $$ or the time to fix it currently I just bought a gallon of ATF @ Wal-Mart and check it on the weekends. I know the rear seal is like $45 from Dodge b/c I checked on it a while back before I crawled under the truck and realized it was the front seal.



I believe you wouldn't have to remove the X-fer case to replace the seal, just remove the front driveshaft and you might have plenty of room. If not just stick a GOOD jack under the transmission and remove the crossmember.

They are easy to change.



There are only 4 or 5 bolts that hold the t case to the od unit on the trans. (auto, don't know how many are on a stick??)



I am going to pull mine this weekend to seal the transfer case halves.

I think mine may be leaking from the transfer case halves as well, is it common for them to leak there, and how hard is it to split and seal?? By splitting, does anything internal come apart, or can you split and put back together no problems?? Thanx guys!!

If it is the front seal, then it is an easy fix. If I recall correctly, you will have to:



1) Remove the skid plate

2) Remove the front driveshaft at the U-joint first, x-fer case second

3) Pull the seal

4) Insert new seal (I had to use a speedy sleeve on mine)

5) Reassemble, taking special care to clean the driveshaft bolts VERY well and loctite them in.



I failed to do the last part of #5 and had the bolts vibrate out, heard a funny clunk, rattle, rattle one day and saw the drive shaft lying on the skid plate .



Good luck, it's a pretty simple project.

I didn't get around to doing it, but I did talk to a service tech that does about three a month.



He said you can leave the t case attached to the trans. (Of course a lift does make it very nice)



You just unbolt the back have being carefull not to break the snap ring that is in the output shaft housing of the t-case (not trans and slide the half back and take a die grinder with a scotch brite wheel and clean the matting surfaces and then get a good bead of RTV in there and bolt is back together.



He made it sounds easy, but I will have to find out for myself when I get around to fixing it.



Have you checked the little vent plug that is on the top of the t case? The vent plug looks like the little black plugs that go over the adjusters on the drum brakes.
