Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Help! transmission Problem

Dad has 2001 QC long bed Auto 4x4, stock. When you start from a stop in the 'D' gear there is some serious holdback. Something is keeping it from accelerating. If you put it in the '1' gear and start from a stop it has all of its power. So shifting the auto manually it has all of its power. If you are stopped and put it in 'D' the truck will not roll forward. It will hold you in place. As soon as you drop it from 'D' to '1' it will start to roll at idle. It just acts like somebody is holding the brakes. Any thoughts? The truck is still under warranty. It has around 61,000.

Sounds like it is not taking of in first gear when in the D range... have you checked for codes?

Didn't get a chance to check any codes yet. I probably won't be able to until middle of the week. Didn't know if anybody else had experienced anything similiar.

My truck did the same thing. It was starting off in 2nd and not 1st. I had the valve body replaced under warranty. good luck.

need to count your shifts and see what gear it is starting in. Most likely its starting out in second gear, and the cause for that is the govener solenoid sticking. The gov solenoid is on the passenger side of the VB and is easy to change and fairly easy for a transmission shop to clean and fix.

The solenoid is on the way. I made sure it was starting in 2nd which it was. Talked to the guys at the shop I used to work at and that's what they said as well. I personally don't know anything about auto's. Thanks for the help.

sensor too

I just went thru the same thing. I changed the gov solenoid. No fix. Change the gov sensor. Fixed it.

The problem you are having and I had is a govenor "system" problem. The govenor solenoid is the most common part to fail, although the sensor is a close second. Each part cost me 65 bucks. I wish I had change them both the first time. YOU might get lucky, might not... ...
