My truck died turning into the parking lot at work this morning.

It is in the lower 50*s this morning, the truck was running fine for about 10 minutes. I got on the throttle a bit then lifted to turn into the parking lot and it died.

No Check Engine Light

P-PCU: 0500, 0622, 0743, 0753, 1765 - This have been on for "a while"

P-ECU: 1693 - ditto

Lift pump runs, nothing under the truck (puddle), nothing laying in the street. After turning over for a few seconds it shudders really heavy, enough to shake the open door. Turned off the Comp Box, 1/2 tank fuel (been in there for a couple of days), FP/EGT/Boost = normal prior to this problem. Being that I just pulled into work this morning, I have not turned a wrench yet.

Where should I start????

TIA,

Bill

P-PCU:

0500: No Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal

0622: Alternator Field Improper Switching

0743: TCC Solenoid/Trans Relay Circuits

0753: Trans 3–4 Shift Sol/Trans Relay Circuits

1765: Trans 12 Volt Supply Relay Control Circuit

P-ECU:

1693: DTC Detected In ECM Or PCM

These are according to:. .

Sounds like an electrical problem with the transmission is causing a "No Start" condition.

HHHMMM, the codes have been there for a while, I think the DTT trans controller is causing them.

RGilbert, thank you for looking those codes up for me, I appreciate your help!

UPDATE: 3 hrs later and it still will not start..... :{

I just disconnected the negative battery terminal from each battery.

I sure hope that this is not where that whole (effectively) voided warrenty thing comes to bite me in the behind.....

Well, I reconnected the batteries and still no luck. I picked up a fuel filter at lunch and will try replacing it after work... ...

Any other suggestions?

Just a quick question,

Have you tried to blead the fuel system? I would crack the #1 and #3 injectors and crank. You will need a 19mm or 3/4" wrench for this. Crank to see if you are geting fuel. If you are, fuel should start to spray along the side of the valve cover.

DO NOT check to see if fuel is coming out with your hand, use a peace of cardboard!!!!

If you can get fuel to come out of those two lines, it should start on the other 4 cylinders, though it will run very rough. You might have to give it a little extra cranking to get it started, just do not run the starter for more than 15 sec. at a time.

That should get it blead to let it start.

Air in the fuel system is the most common reason for the no-start. Something similar to this happened to JSTULL on this board. It would not start, then the next day, it started like nothing was ever wrong. He has had no problems since.

I hope this helps some

Rich,

Yep, I will check that tonight.

Hopefully it is just the CPS, the way that it just shutdown has me thinking that it is an electronic issue, like you first suggested.

Thank you again for your continued help, I really appreciate it!

I got the truck home with a Dakota (hey at least it was a Dodge) and a tow strap. Getting it into the garage was "interesting". I used my Hensley draw bar (2" square on both ends with a 2"drop) to "hook" the trucks back to back (had to lift the Dakota by hand a couple of inches to get the bar to match the receivers). Then the Dakota pushed my RAM into the garage.

The truck "wanted" to start, which was different from the few times I tried it during the day. I changed the fuel filter, which basically looked okay. And after turning over for a bit and pumping the throttle hard, the cummins fired up! I was able to start it "normal" several times after that. It ran good on a short test drive, but it seems to hesitate or even bog down going from idle to med/heavy throttle.

So, it is running, but I do not think that I have found the problem. Unless I released an air trap when I changed the filter.

It did not generate any new codes, but a friend with an ODBII scanner is dropping by tomorrow night to see if anything shows up.

Special thanks to Rich for your on-line support, and to FMMclaren for stopping by to help me out. Oh yes, I suppose the Dakota, tow strap, and Hensley draw bar deserve honerable mention as well.

any news rock-n-rammer. I'm the one Rich mentioned that had the same condition. my truck had 1500 miles on it at the time. I'm at 52,000 now with absolutely no problems since. I attributed mine to air. It fired the next morning and has run fine since, never had any codes, though. they may or may not be related to your problem. good luck.

Hi Jason,

We hooked up the scanner, but unfortunately it could not read my truck, old firmware. Ironically, the truck ran absolutely great for the next couple of days. When it started getting cold, I ran around with the comp set on level 5 for a while, then rational came back into play and I turned it down. I thought the low power was persception. After this incident with it not running, it ran great on level 2..... for a couple of days. No new codes on the OD, that is a relief!

It currently is running okay, decent power, but it still intermittenly hesitates under medium to heavy throttle. I thought that I was going to have to pull to the shoulder of the road getting on the highway the other day, then it kicked in. I think the hard starting (a couple of chokes when first started) that I have been noticing is nothing more than the weather change.

So I am keeping my fingers crossed. My mechanic friend has a relationship with a local Cummins shop. He is going to try and get them to loan us their scanner overnight so I might be able to peak into the computer. I also know somebody whose son owns one of the top 100 Dodge dealerships locally here in MI. I have asked her to inquire with her son to see how he feels about working on modified trucks with respect to warranties. I don't mind taking my lumps, but I would hate to take it in for a wheel bearing (hypothetic) and have them void the warrenty because of gauges or whatever.

Really glad to hear that your problem came and went! It certainly gives me some hope.
