Hi, I have a 99, 24 valve with 105,000 and change. I changed my fuel filter tonight and cannot get the engine to run. I tried to bleed the air via the brass plug, but I get no fuel or even any air out this plug. I bumped the motor several times and can hear the pump running but still no fuel. Could this be the lift pump in the tank if so why did changing the filter cause it to stop working. Are the lift pumps expensive and are they hard to change. Thanks for the help Tom

Sounds like your lift pump is bad. We had the exact same situation a couple of years ago.

The lift pump is located on the drivers side of the motor near the bottom, it's not in the tank.

CHeck with a Cummins distributor before you buy one, they are usually cheaper than the Dodge dealer. If you have a little time to have a pump shipped to you, Piers has pretty good prices on the 24V lift pumps.

PS, changing the fuel filter allowed air in the fuel system. If the electric fuel pump is working properly, it will re-fil the canister and the truck will run just fine. Since your lift pump is bad, it won't do what it's supposed to.

Unfortunately that is when most of find out we have a bad lift pump, when we are without gauges. A lift pump is not that hard to put in, but one trick that I did to get my truck to fire up. I held the drain up, while I had my son pressurize the fuel tank with air. once the fuel was flowing I then proceeded to to start the truck. A couple of cranks and it fired up, then I was off to get a new pump installed.

First at over 100000 pump is most likely worn out . But check if you have fuel in the tank . You said you checked at the brass plug there are two of them one before one after the filter. The one foward to the bumper is the one to check ,and after you get a gauge thats the port to put the hose to the sender on. Some times it takes a lot of bumps to get the pump to put out fuel to fill the canister ,You can add clean fuel to the canister but if not careful a speck of dirt or other stuff could enter the injector pump . Cost from Dodge forgetaboutit ... ... . Go to Cummins each Cummins dealer can and will charge different prices . Use the net or Phone to get the best price . Not hard to change comes with instructions. Appox cost 118 to 165$ depending on the overhead. Do get a gauge save the injector pump you may have unknown to you running on the injector pump . Your call . Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY:-{} :D
