Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) loud noise on start-up

Just changed my lift pump (truck died yesterday, showed no fuel pressure, when cranking and lift pump would run but was not as loud as usual).

Now with the new lift pump, the sound is still very quite, not as loud as the other. I know its pumping, because I was able to cycle the pump until I verified that the pump output was filling the fuel filter container. I then closed the lid on the container and cycled the pump another 6 or 7 times (I'm getting a solid 15 lbs on my pre and post filter fuel pressure gages during the running of the pump).

The truck will not start, just cranks. Should I check to see if I have fuel flow going into the VP?

I'm still worried that new pump is so quite when cycling.

I've got a pre (connected at output of fuel pump) filter guage and a post filter gauge (connected at input of VP).

I've done fuel filter changes before and only had to cycle the pump 3 or four time and it fired right up.

TIA

Jon, Crack open the injector lines 1,3&4 and cycle the L/P till you see fuel coming out, when you get fuel out of these 3 lines tighten them down and it will start, skip line #2 because it is hard to get to.

Kevin,

Do you mean on the high pressure side? If so, Should I loosen the fuel lines at the output of the VP or at the the injector (cylinder head)?

Thanks

Jon

Thanks Kevin,

It worked (had to do it a couple of times, and it spit a bunch of white smoke while cranking, until it started). I got it started. Why didn't I have to bleed the other injectors (just did the three you mentioned), do they bleed themselves once the engine starts?

I also had to bleed at the input of the VP before my fuel gauges starting showing a decent pressure.

I'm relived that it's started, but still kinda scared about the whole lift pump thing. I used to think the pump would fail gradually (give you a chance to get home and swap it out at my leisure) , but as I said earlier, it can fail in an instant and leave you on the side of the road (what happened to me, a friend towed me home, a power stroke actually).

Makes me think a lot harder about relocating the pump or getting the FASS kit.

Happy Thanks giving, I'd be lost and a lot poorer with out you guys like yourself.

Glad to hear you got it going :) When ever you do a filter change of open the fuel system for any reason try to have a full tank of fuel, this will help the pump to do its job easier.

Jon, I just passed thru your town last week coming home from seeing my son in the Navy, wife and grandson.

Cheers, Kevin
