I have a rattle coming from my turbo that is making me VERY nervous - it is the worst just before full spool and right after I let up on the throttle - It also is very loud (the clatter) maintaining 70 MPH or so - never heard this before and I am a wreck... - I drilled and tapped my exhust manifold for the pyro last night and used PDR boost bolt for SPA boost gauge - maybe boost bolt not all the way in - shavings I didnt catch in the turbO... . any help is appreciated!!!

Just a shot in the dark here but it sounds to me that the dipstick could be rattling.

Also have you pulled the intake hose off and inspected the turbo for too much free play?

The truck is still under warranty. No worries. Sounds like it could be a bad Turbo (bearing, etc. ); the free play in the input end of the turbo shaft should be a good indication if this is the problem (and it is pretty bad already). I doubt the EGT probe installation has anything to do with it. Everything will work out fine. Keep us posted.

I took off the hose between the filter and turbo - there is very little play with the small fan/and shaft in the turbo - how much is too much play

I've always heard as long as the blades aren't coming close to hitting the housing you're fine. Due to the turbo's high rotational speeds and heat there are no bearings but rather bushings, the shaft rotates on a film of oil. Until the truck is running there will be some play.

If it has very little play as you say, then I would say the turbo is fine.

I just re-read your post and since you just got done working under the hood, is there a chance you left a wrench somewhere?

I'm not trying to sound like a smart a$$ by the way.

I installed my EGT and boost gages and took a spin around the block (about a 12 mile block here) spring of '03. I had just crossed a RR X-ing that was rough and on a steep incline with sharp corner ... ... ..... probably 15MPH. When all of a sudden I here a h*ll of a racket and then ***** hitting the asphalt

I stopped, popped the hood, looked around, walked the ditches ... ... ... . man I was a wreck.

My conclusion ... ... ... ... ... I had to have left an open end/box end wrench laying somewhere that it could fall into the fan and be slung to the ground. I never did find wrenches in the road or either ditch, but that had to be what it was ... ... ... ..... that was 30 or 40 thousand miles ago!

Side Note

I'm also the guy who tears the garage apart looking for the wrench in his back pocket :-laf Been there done that several times!

I spent 3 hrs. looking for my keys one time - the conversation went something like this-

Wife: did you check your pockets?

Me: yes baby I checked my pockets... .

continued on for 3 hrs tracing everywhere i've been when finally-

Wife: are you SURE you checked your pockets?

Me: yes baby I am sure... Oh here they are in the seat cushin (as I save my ego and quickly pull them out of my pocket)

Anyways back at the task at hand - I put everything back together, rechecked for debris (tools) in the engine compartment and took it for a 50 mile cruise - I couldn't get it to make the clatter again... who knows - maybe fiddling with the dip sticks and checking everything that moved for loose connections, I made something right - I'll post again if I hear it again

It was probably the dipstick :)

Thanks guys for all your help!!!!!

Well I'm glad the noise stopped. That truck is too new to be giving you problems like that.
