The other day I'm sitting at a light when I got yelled at by a tree hugger in a Subaru. Apparently my truck's smoke at idle was a bit too much for him to handle.

Smarty level 7, cold engine, exhaust brake on. Steady stream of haze coming from the exhaust. Stock programming, not so much with the EB on, and none with the EB off.

Posted this on DTR, but I wasn't able to get much in the way of a response, but one member did suggest that my problem may be related to the load of a tight converter and the exhaust brake.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to what to look for? New fuel filter made no difference.

Thanks!

Stock injectors or aftermarket.

Stock sticks for now.

have you tried any stanadyne ?

I ran a couple bottles through when the truck was new, but have been using Amsoil additive lately. I'll pick up some Stanadyne and give it a shot. I ran it every tank in my '03...

So did you lay the black cloud of road rage back at him?

Nope. I'm very careful not to aggravate too many people around here. Some local streets are "special traffic zones" where you can be reported and issued a ticket without a cop to witness it. I really need to move to a more rural area! Photo radar and red-light cameras everywhere too.

It would have been perfect. My tail pipe was aiming right towards his open driver window! I guess that's why he was complaining.

The Ex brake will load the engine, along with the tight converter, along with the Smarty... . The engine computer is trying to maintain idle RPM speed with all that drag and restriction on it. How does it do that???? MORE FUEL! (=) SMOKE!!

My stocker 5. 9 with only a Smarty jr on it will do the same at idle with just the Ex brake on. Mine is a stick so it doesn't have an auto trans dragging on it.
Ignore the guy!
