Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Help White Smoke & Major Oil Consumption

[turbo torque]

Just put headgasket and ARP studs in. When I fired up it ran a little rough,after a few minutes rpm started slowly ramping up, If I hit the throttle it would return to normal. In less than ten minutes I had no oil pressure!!

Checked the stick and, Nothing. (just changed oil) Exhaust was piped outside so we didn't see how white it was but, were told it was a white fog.



Could the turbo have something to do with this?

I also changed over the housing on my hx35 to a 14 cm housing.



Any suggestions for where to start tomorrow?

You should remove your intake pipe off your turbo and check for oil if the seal went bad or was damaged during housing X also ckeck for oil in exhaust. If it began to ramp up in rpm it is a good sign it was burning a good amount of oil. You can count yourself lucky it did not go into a runaway situation the only way you could have shut it down then would to be by blocking off turbo intake and choking it persay. I have seen many engines go into runaway its not pretty it generally requires picking up pieces after it gernades itself. The old 2 stroke detroit diesels were common for this. But can happen on any diesel engine if it gets enough oil to run on through the intake.



Do not start it again with out checking turbo out thouroughly.

Truck is not here but, I did pull intake, and no oil. Didn't check exhaust though, it was the end of day and just walked away.



RPM increase was only 50-75, if I bumped the throttle it would return to normal. I didn't know about the white smoke at the time, so I pulled oil cooler (again) to check for leaks, its fine. My cooling system is such a mess, couldnt tell if it had new oil in it or not. Learning of the smoke outside, it must of gone through the exhaust, but no oil in turbo intake? What could of happened

Did you pull the injectors out when doing this job 1 may have not seated fully or leaking past o-rings causing oil to go passed but this would have also created a noise under compression stroke it would have been noticable. Possible head gasket damaged. I would check turbo on exhaust side first though just because no oil in intake side could all be going through exhaust side causing the white smoke.

Yup, pulled injectors,took . 005 off head, and used new washers, o-rings, then torgued to 89 in. lb. I didnt notice unusual noise.

Very possible check there first.
