What is the basis of "Our Free Republic"?

I am looking at a used boat. It has an I/O. The outdrive is an OMC. This is an 85 model boat that looks great, it has been kept in dry storage.

Anyway, does anyone know how good the OMC outdrives are and how about the parts availability and cost.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Tom

The OMC stuff is avaliable, but not as popular as Mercriuser, which is available anywhere, if yer lookin' fer a boat, mines fer sale... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .....

Thanks

Rob,

Nice looking rig. I'm looking for something with a little more open space though.

Re: your sig

I assume (yes I know) your talking about the head on my cummins. When does it need to be torqued (Ihave 20K) and can you re-torque the bolts? I thought I read they were stretch bolts and could not be re-torqued. Please educate me on this.

Thanks

Tom

Now I'm not a teacher, so this is a "at your own risk" opinion, my headgasket took a dump awhile ago, I then was informed that it's common on the 24-valves to do so. Which if Ida known that Ida re-torqued it. I re-torqued my freinds 24-valve, and it's been fine, only time will tell. Just make sure that if/when you do re-torque, that the engine is COLD, then torque to 130ft/lb, from the center out. BTW, mine didn't blow on the compression ring, but rather an oil galley let loose, what a mess, oil clear back to the rear axle!:{ I did clean it up enough to win "Best in Show" at Thunder in Muncie, last week! Lucky me!

Thanks for the info. I guess while I'm re-torqueing I might as well check the valves. Come to think of it, while I'm there might as well replace the injectors. Dang! there goes the budget.

Thanks shovelhead, wanna buy it?:D

DMcClellan,

They don't all suck, my Bravo outdrive has been flawless since new, in '95. I just change the lube in it every year, no problems.

OMC stuff

is pretty good if the vintage is in the Cobra production years. If it says "Cobra", it's a good outdrive. Mine is eleven years old with no problems. Bombardier now owns OMC, and I would check with an OMC dealer and check on parts availability if I were you.

Now as for my next outdrive, Volvo is probably the best one out there. Had one in the ocean; great drive.

took a pass

Thanks for the help. I decided to pass on this one. Just didn't feel right.

Ron, I have heard the Volvo is a good unit but pricey and sometimes hard to get parts. I don't know, just what I heard. I have never had a I/O, always outboard.

Thanks again

Tom

Parts for most outdrives built in within the past 15 years are plentyful OMC built a great outdrive for many years Bombardier does own OMC stuff along with Evinrude and Johnson and we have have no trouble getting parts at all for old or newer outdrives, you can't go wrong with any really as long as it has been taken care of,your best bet is to has an authorized OMC tech or Merc or whatever you buy check the out drive because looks can be decieving, need to check the U joints and the gears inside to check for damage along with the clutches just to be safe.

By the way nice CrownLine Rob;)

Once you own and use an outdrive, you'll never go back. Quiet, very smooth and fast. An automotive engine is used (except for some Mercruiser) and very reliable. No big hulking obstruction behind the boat, and very economical. Probably less than 50% of what a two stroke outboard uses, and less than a four stroke. You'll be at 35 MPH at 3000 RPM while an outboard will be almost 4500 or more. Need parts? Big difference in part costs, all in favor of the outdrive. You can do most of the maintenance and do a whole lot less.
