Horses/Tapeworms??

New Engine specs to come soon

Okay all you fishermen out there I need some help finding my wife a spinning reel for x-mas. I fish alot but I don't use spining reels very much and the ones I do are cheapo's. She bought me a FinNor fly reel a couple of years back and now that she has a custom built rod, she needs a nice reel. I have looked a cabela's and there are about 200 choices. So give me good to above average brands and if necessary models. This reel will be used to fish for silver salmon and smaller fish so its got to have a very good drag. I perfer metal construction of the reel because its tough and wear resistant, some plastic body is okay but the bail and all need to be metal. Also the wife has small hands and needs to use a smaller style reel, it needs to hold about 100 yards of 15 lb test mono line.

I want to spend between $100 and $250 max.

Thanks for the help...

Before I switched over to casting reels I used "D. A. M. QUICK" reels. They are made in Germany. I had good luck with them, drag was good. Its been a few years so I don't know if the quality is still there. I think Cabelas carries them, at least they used to.

Well, I just went to Cabelas website, they don't carry them anymore. I would look at the saltwater reeels that Cabelas has and if you pick one of the higher end reels it should be fine for what you are looking for.

I ave a few Penns. I think the frames are now made of graphite.

Mine are metal.

The 3500, 4500 or 5500 sounds like what you'd be looking at.

They should all be under $100. 00.

I've heard of another brand that's supposed to be good, maybe it was Fin Nor? I forget.

Quicks and Mitchels where all my dad used when I was a boy. You still see them once in a while but they are getting $$. I was at a gun show a while back and this guy had about 50 reels for sale, all of them where $5 except the Quick it was $50... .

Found some nice reels but still looking.....

For your location I would recommend Shimano spinning reels. The reason being that they can be had for a middle of the road price with very good durability. Also, parts and pieces are easily interchanged as well as the ability to get replacement parts. They are the only rells I use for Boon-Dogging.

Baitcasters are Ambassadeur 6501s and 6601s depending on what fishery we are in.

And just to mention Penn. I use the 320 to get the 12' + Sturgeon to the boat!

Most folks will probably have lake (bass and trout) experience or ocean experience. Obviously, the Northwest and on up to Alaska, our river fisheries are different.

Good luck in your choices.

I have a Shimano, Quicksilver? with a cool little trigger on it to make casting easier. I bought it about 5 years ago at Wal Mart and it has held up well including a trip to the Boundary Waters where I caught some 20-26" Northern Pike. I believe it is mainly all metal construction.

I am not a big fisherman but my 8 year old son and I get out 3-4 times a year. He uses my rod with the Shimano now that I have gotten into fly fishing.
