He has a Ford 2003 6. 0 automatic 4x4. Only mod done to it is 4 in. straight through exhaust. Everything else is bone stock. His last two camping trips pulling his fifth wheel he has had some issues with power. His truck will be pulling along a flat road and suddenly he notices that he cant get up and go. Meaning that his truck won't accelerate much. He says eventually staying on the throttle for a period of time the power starts to come back and the turbo starts spooling up again. He claims to have never had this issue before removing stock exhaust but then again he only towed once with the stock exhaust. I know this is a powerjoke and all but I figure who better to ask then the experts at the TDR.
 
Tell your buddy to head to the dealer and have then replace the EGR valve. They plug with carbon and stick open causing a huge vacuum leak which kills the boost and power. It rears its ugly head under a load. My 2004 ate 2 in 145K miles. It is under warranty with a $100. 00 deductible if the truck has less than 100K miles. If is is out of warranty the valve is around $200. 00 if you bring the man a cup of coffee... around $250. 00 if you go in raising hell. It is easy to replace in the driveway as well... just two bolts.
 
That is not the full picture. I have a friend with the 2003 and he had the same problem. The EGR issue blossomed into a turbo failure. The Truck ran ok with the egr fixed, he got PO'd took it back to FORD and they replaced the Turbo. Then the truck ran normal. To round out his day, they did not warrrant the turbo.



The 2003 6. 0 have issues.
 
Last year I was sent south to the lower 48 and back with the company 04 F-450 pulling a 34' goose. On the way back up I lost some injectors (last day on the trip thankfully). It limped home. The next guy took it south two weeks later. Dropped more injectors & the EGR was done. He broke in Canada. A few months later the turbo let go. What a pile of crap that 6. 0 is. And I never got used to seeing it rev to 4grand to make power.
