My 99 Dodge is on the lift for rear axle repair and needs new bearings. The reason for the teardown was excessive backlash . 030 to . 040 and the generation of fuzz on the mag-hytec magnet after a hot supper!
Upon initial teardown I found the bearing caps were swapped left to right. A tooth pattern check also showed that the pinion was to close and needs to be moved back.
Also observed was a new bearing on the pinion but a severely used race in the housing.
I suspect that the previous owner swapped in a (new/used) gear set or carrier and installed it as he recieved it.
I'm hoping to save the gearset by properly re-setting it.
I have the Miller 6730 pinion depth setup tool but it did not come with instructions, can anyone help me? An internet search found no info.
Thanks Tim
