well hopefully I can get some input on helping a friend he has a 99 dually auto. with 200k miles changed fuel filter, oil new bhaf. did a air test no boost leak. no codes according to my smarty. he has no gauges which im pushing him to get. the problem is I believe centered around the transmission. I know it needs flushed and probley the bands adjusted. I know it hunts for gears. the worst is hitting about 50mph on a slight hill it will shudder like it wont down shift. is this the band adjustment or possible bad tq converter. what are signs of bad tq-converter. he doesnt blow any excessive smoke he doesnt have any performance add-ons. also seems the truck has almost a dead peddle takes for ever to get response at times with the peddle. if a apps is going would it throw codes. also the apps reset is it the same process for all 98. 5 to 02. well maybe you all can get me some tips to check out.

thanks.

VP-44 dying? Try all the grounds first. T/C dying will cause shudder, but not dead pedal unless the computer is shutting things down. Normally limp home is 3rd gear starts from a stop from what I've read.

You can always pull the pan on the transmission and look. Lot's of crumblies means bad things... The atf+4 in these things stinks rotten even when new, so color and sniff will only give you half the picture.

don't flush a transmission do it rite drop the pan put in a new filter and gasket

why would leave a dirty filter in the transmission and skip off thinking man i got a good job

ask any real trans shop and if they are honest they will tell you a shop with a flush machine is not looking out for you it's all about $$$$

now after the filter is changed and you want a flush go for it

i have shops try to tell me it's not a filter it's a screen tell that BS to some yuppy

ok then if thats rite never change

your oil filter just the oil

you tell that to the SOB well I would never do that hello you bonehead

thats what your doing with your transmission

I have had them say the dealer uses flush machine they are not your friend only go to a dealer for warranty work the dealer makes most of it's profit in the service dept

by selling you things you don't need

I call this yupp yupp vill a nice lounge

hot coffee nice tv pat you on the back we got your back look find a mom and pop shop where thay are not trying sell you work you don't need

and if they do you rite stick with them

these places love yuppy's they take a look at you when you get out of the car size you up and say we got us a yuppy $$$$$ and there all over you like there running for office

well I should not have said flush the transmission my friend said that he had the transmission serviced with dodge 40k miles ago what they did (service) I dont know exactly. I found out his VP was changed 20k miles ago. its not a shudder I feel more of the gears are not wanting to kick down and when you hit a hill it wants to stay in a higher gear and everything bogs down and you get the loop loop feel because your in to high of gear and actual speed is slower. as far as the dead pedal it wasnt everytime but from what i have read you may not always throw a code on a early dying vp-44

thanks

The trans has solenoids in it, sometimes they quit altogether or start acting funny. They are pretty cheap, if they are dead or dying. Have you checked the APPS? Try disconnecting the bat's and resetting everything. Can you shift manually?

I was going to try the apps reset this weekend but I didnt know if the same reset worked on 99's the same as it would when I did it on my 02. would a dying solenoid throw codes? thanks for the pointer

The APPS recalibrate should work on any VP truck. When recalibrating the VP is discovering what voltage range the APPS is putting out so it can respond accordingly. The recalibrate procedure is the same from '98. 5 - '02. From the 2 symptoms you are describing I do not believe it is the APPS.

The shudder sounds to me like it is the torque converter going bad. Call a reputable transmission shop and get their . 02 cents worth.

The dead peddle you describe sounds like a dying VP44 to me.

The APPS may or may not throw a code and the VP may or may not throw a code from my experiences.

Godspeed,
Trent
