For folks that live in WV

We have a Stihl 042AV chainsaw. There was a problem with the chain not getting lubricated. So I undid the side cover and pulled the bar off. The hole that the oil comes out of was plugged up. So I Cleaned it all out and did some other cleaning since I had it apart. It went out to saw a ew logs this afternoon, and it still did not seem to be lubricating. So I took it back to the workbench and took the bar off and ran it to see if any oil was coming out. I noticed none. Anybody have any ideas about what might be causing this?

Also, on the underisde of the saw, there is an adjustment screw of some sort. Does anyone know what the function of this is? Thanks

On the underside of my Stihl the screw is for oil flow.

There should be a worm gear on the inside of the chutch that drives the screw that spurts the oil out the hole..... I'd suspect the worm gear is stripped, fairly easy to fix.

get a small piece of wire and put a hook in the end of it. open the oil tank and pull out the pickup tube. there should be a filter on the end.

if the tube is deteriorated or the filter is missing, that may be the problem. replace the tube only with tygon type tubing if necessary.

if the filter is there, you should be able to unplug it from the tube and carefully blow some compressed air (20 psi or less) BACK through the filter to make sure it is not clogged with dirt. you can then blow air through the tube to make sure it comes out the oiler hole.

if the filter appears to be clogged, you can soak it in gasoline or lacquer thinner for about 10 minutes.

hope this helps.

sounds like the oil pump has headed south. No big deal to change just slosh gas around in oil tank to clean out sticky chain oil left behind It might be a plugged inlet I am a Husky man and they heve a heavy brass screen Iam sure Stihl has something similar

I've started tearing it apart. Do you have to completely split the saw to get to the oil pump? I ain't done much to it since Now our other saw, a Stihl 018 won't run now. It was doggy so I tore down the carb and cleaned it all up. Put it back together and it won't run unless the air cleaner's off and the carb isn't flush against the jug, so more air is coming through.

On the 042, I got to the worm gear. It looks like new. So that obviously isn't the problem. I hooked the wire to the pickup tube. I am only able to barely get the filter up to the hole. I can see through it and it looks clean, and what I can see of the tube looks in good shape as well. Any more ideas guys?
