I have a 2001, 2500, 4X4, Quad Cab. Because of the height, my wife and others have a hard time getting in my truck. I was considering a set of Nerf Bars (with the rubber pad step) to assist others in getting into my truck. I want them to be low enough to provide a "step", but not too low to where they look bad.

Is there anything I should know about buying a set? What Manufacturer is the best? I see prices all over the place from $450 at Genos and Mopar Performance to $139 from some manufactures on ebay.

What style or manufacturer would be the best looking?

Has anyone bought a set off of ebay and been satisfied with what they received?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to the responses.

Bob

I have "Back Country" nerf bars, they are stainless steel, they look great and hold up well, I took these off my '99, they are 4 years old, and still look great, cost about $320 click my on truck pics below to see them.

I second the vote for the Westin CPS bars. They are, IMHO the best stainless bar on the market. Super strong, easy to install and the finish is show quality.

However, that being said, fpr the money, the Summitt brandx chrome plated bar is also a pretty nice deal. I bought them for my 01 and was pretty impressed with them.

Something else to think about.....

You might want to check out the WAAG website, I've been using a set of their bars with kickouts, which complements the big hips of my 01 Dually for almost two years now and they've been holding up pretty well and still look fairly sharp.

Without any sort of bar's or steps and especially with taller tires, climbing aboard would be challenging to say the very least.

It's worthwhile mentioning of course that your eventual selection of sidebars should also take into consideration any future intentions with respect to a slide-in camper. If this is not an issue for you then forget the rest of what follows.

Not all sidebar mounting systems are equal. In fact some will compromise your choice of camper tie-downs, because they use a common mounting point on both sides of the truck at the rear.

I have had my truck for about 6 weeks now. My only mod so far is nerf bars. I have had Luverne and Westin's on past trucks, but I saved some money and bought a set made by MAAP (steelhorse) off of Ebay. Fairly easy to install and they don't flex with me, 250#. Could not beat the $215 shipped to my door. :p

Another vote for Westin Platinum Series. Look great and have a lifetime warranty. My wife has no trouble steppin' inside the cab now.

I purchased a set of chrome Westins from a guy who was selling floor display units on ebay. They were new, but missing the hardware package which I got from Westin for less than $20. Altogether I paid less than $150 delivered to my door and I am very satisfied with the fit and quality.

I have Smittybilt Stainless Steel Nerf Bars on my '01. Ihave been very pleased with them for the past two years.

Still look great even with the sand and salt that is spread on the road here in New England.

dont go rhino

I have a set of Go Rhino Wheel-to-Wheel step bars. They were mid-range priced from 4-Wheel Parts Wholesalers. I'm disappointed in their mounting arrangement and step pads.

The mounts are not left and right, they are identical. The instructions don't mention this. I figured out to turn one set upside-down and backwards. Structurally it's fine. Asthetically, it disturbs my sense of symmetry. You can't see them anyway.

The plastic step pads don't fit flush to the bar. These gaps can collect debris and flip-flops. These you can see.

To give them credit, the black powder coat finish is good and after a year, show no signs of deterioration.

The main reason I bought them is because they are wheel-to-wheel. If you have trouble getting into the cab, you can forget about reaching into the bed. Having a step in front of the rear wheel is worth it!

Cheers,

Neil

I wish I could help you on price of my westin black powder coats.

But it has been 4 years and well I am not as much on memory as I used to be!! I do feel I got good value in my purchase and they do mount well and stay with you.

Good luck on your choice Patrick

I also have the black Westins. I looked at some others that they sell in the area and decided on the Westins because they actually mount to the cab and frame. Some others just clipped onto the sheetmetal of the cab. They have held up well through the snow this year. I not only got them for my 5' tall wife but to help protect the bottom of the doors and cab. I put mine on about 3 years ago and right now I don't remember what I paid for them but it wasn't outrageous.

We just took a pair of black powder coated nerf bars (OEM Dodge) off of our 1999 3500 dually Quad Cab, and will be putting the retractable steps on our new 03. If you have any interest let us know and we will see what we can work out. These have a bit of rust under fronts, but should be able to be easily cleaned up and we are very reasonable folks.

If you wish you can also email us at -- email address removed --
