Please somebody HELP!

Big jump in amount of turbo

So I love my new truck but what are some options to get rid of the turbo lag? Yesterday for example. I was driving home from work in the traffic doing about 50. I signaled to go to the left lane and hit the throttle. It felt like it was just sitting there for a few seconds and then it launched hard and belching black smoke over whoever was beside me. That smoke part was funny but I rather not change lanes and just sit there blocking traffic. Upgrading to BHAF should help with spool up a little. What else can I do that won't cost me tons of cash?

Thanks

Hrmm, tons of cash as in hundreds or a thousand or more?

A cam would probably run 1000. 00 installed and that should help because they take the retarded timing back out and run it straight up I believe.

Some have said a TAG and torque tube help.

For 70. 00 you could advance the injection timing by 2 degrees that would help some, more info on that here:

The TST box is said to hit hard down low, I havent tried one.

When I gutted my muffler, it REALLY helped the part throttle responce! Anything to reduce the exhaust back pressure will help.

If you have a torch and can weld, gutting the muffler is free. If you would like instructions on how to do it, send me a PM. There are lots of different mufflers and exhaust systems available as well.

You aren't seeing turbo lag,but emmision controls. When you stomp on it the fuel timing gets retarded. When you roll into it less aggressively the fueling will advance. Anything that makes a noticable differance will not be warranty friendly... ... ... ... be aware :)

I agree, you need to roll into the throttle... . not mash it down... . it's much diff than a gasser (as this is my first diesel, I had the same problem)..... find a nice long street where you can speed and do a couple of runs... . I find it works best when you progressively give it more throttle... . fyi, mines never smoked that I know of... .

also at 50 mph you're at approx 1600 rpm... did it downshift when u mashed it?

I agree to the not mash with the new non 12-valve. Unless you have a chip it will usually cut out. With our 05 never had any problems as long as you slowly increase pedal. Gutting the muffler makes a big difference though and it stays quite to you can hear turbo a little more if your window is down with radio off.

Clean the cat out and the lag will practically disappear! I believe that is where the biggest restriction is, not the muffler. But changing out the muffler will help.

If the problem truly is turbo lag, changes on the induction side of the house will have a more dramatic effect. On an intercooled turbo, the air space between the compressor impellor and intake manifold is very large and it takes the compressor a few seconds to fully pressurize this area.

On my former Banks turbo'd 7. 3, the compressor outlet was less than a foot away from the intake and boost was instantaneous. Virtually no lag and instant throttle response. The downside was that it wasn't intercooled so you couldn't run much boost... 9-11 lbs was typical at full song pulling a load.

As already mentioned, exhaust mods or anything that allows the turbo to spool faster will reduce lag.

Listen to Bob, he knows what he's talking about. You just have to learn how to drive these things. Rolling into it a little BEFORE stomping it will get away a lot quicker than just stomping it at idle.

Not that I remember. I was trying to hurry and change lanes to make room for cars merging onto the highway. You know the type that are never even close to going fast enough to even be on the road :-{}

I hit the gas and movedd over and it just seemed to stay at the same speed or ven slow a bit. It really caught me off guard. I usually just roll gradually on the gas but was in a hurry and must have went too far

fill out your sig! i think part of the problem is the auto trans it always keeps the rpms low then when you need power not only does the turbo have to spool up but the trans has to down shift. mine will jump down one gear then another then back up a gear then take off (feels like forever!!!)with a black cloud left behind. my 03 six speed did not do that because i was always in the right gear to keep the turbo spooled. i do agree that intake and exhaust improvements will help!

Intake and exhaust will help both responce and mileage, so its a win/win. You can go cheap and gut the cat and muff or you can drop a couple hundred on full exhaust, intake upgrades run from $50 for a free flow filter for your stock box to under $300 for a full intake system. Check the classifieds for good deals!

Not to hijack the thread, but since we are talking exhaust, does anyone know if the exhaust piping is the same for the 05's as it is for the 03's?

Thanks
