Go to the tire manufactures web site. It will state the range of rim widths that will go with a paticular tire. I usually go to BF Goodrich's site. http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/bfgapp/index.jsp

Then select the vehicle type, pick a tire, then click on Specifications and you shoud get the following

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/assets/pdf/all_terrain_ta_kd.pdf.

Using this chart you will see the suggested rim width for a 286-75-16 is 7. 5 to 9 inches. Most places will allow going up one size. I used the 265-75-16 on my truck.

is this rite

the guy in sears tire store had me all messed up

the 99 2500 4x4 stock will take a 285/75/16

looked it up on his computer and told me the truck takes 245/75/16

that the 285 will not fit the tire is to big for the stock rims plus they will rub bad

this kid is 18 or 19 from the looks of him

so I put it off to find out what is the truth

I thank the 285 BFG MT tires will fit

i'd like to go wieder if I can

If you want to stay with the same width get the 255-85-16. Less air resistance and taller than 285-75-16. Stick with 10ply and a solid center rib for longer tire life.
