I have a friend that just bought a 1995 reg cab long bed automatic dodge and has experienced the following a couple of times after it idles for prolonged periods (10 min or more).

He jumps in, puts the selector into drive and starts to drive off, but at about 10 mph it seems to shift into drive or overdrive. It has killed the motor twice doing this, another time he was on the throttle pretty good and it just lugged on up to speed. After a restart it is fine, shifts normal?

Any ideas?

It sounds like it is locking up the torque converter way too soon. To eliminate that as a possibility, you could unplug the OD/TC cable at the transmission and see if it continues. If so, start by doing the obvious things, check fluid level, TV cable adjustment and shifter linkage adjustment.

Then call one of the transmission guru's you see mentioned here.

mine did the same thing a couple months ago, after checking all the obvious things, and having the governor tested it turned out to be the computer. $175 from the junk yard. good luck with it
