Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Help with what transmission company to use

Hello everyone I have a friend with a 95ctd auto hes haveing troubles with it shifting in and out of gear while he is driving . I know hes looking at a new transmission but he asked me to get advise on what company to use . I myself used phoenix transmission {518} and have had great luck with it so far 16,000 miles n no troubles . but he pulls a horse trailer fifthwheel alot so I told him i would ask the guys . any help you can send my way ? Your a ways away however, I just put a goerends in mine out of St. Lucas, Iowa. I love it to death. Dave is a great guy. I had to put transmission lines on mine (leaking), transmission fluid, 3d converter, transmission, and shipping all said and done was $3. 5k. Pretty price but you get what you pay for. He will stand behind the transmission too.

Dave Goerend, you CANNOT beat his customer service and he is a straight up guy.

My advice is to pick the top 2-3 choices and then do a search here on each. Be sure to read the polls on who has what trans.



Then if possible, find and drive 1 or more of each.

I know Fred does this in his spare time, but is he still in business? I have left him several messages and E-mails in the past couple months, never getting a response. I heard from DTT that he was ill for awhile, and taking some time to recover..... is he back in the game?

Now I am curious with today's high prices on our truck's trannys, has _anyone_ done a rebuilt of his/her transmission using a Dodge shop manual?



I have just bought a 94 one and it outlines a complete rebuilt. Are there any rebuilt kits one can buy to do it? I've done Chevy TH350's in the past and it looked scary in the beginning, but after watching a training video and reading a book, it is quite doable.

Rebuild it!

I rebuilt mine with help from Dave Goerend and an ATSG manual. I'd do it again too. It was much easier than I thought. I saved enough that even if I have to rebuild it again I'll save $.

The best advice here is to know what the truck is being used for and how much power it will have and call the major transmission manufacturers. Ask lots of questions. Do a search on the forums and see if you can get a sense of what each company and their transmission is like. Look at people's sigs and see what they have in their truck. Need a little more information on what it is really doing. He may only need to clean or replace the TPS.

They aren't cheap but a new transmission is serious money.

I just used the parts that Dave sent me. Some of his parts and some from a package. Tips? Jump in head first. Nothing like 3201 parts dripping red fluid scattered around the shop for motivation. ATSG manual is sort of a minumum and assumes you know a few things about what yer doing (I didn't). There's probably a better manual for a first timer (like me) but it and Dave got me through.



If you can get the transmission out of your truck, there weren't alot of special tools. I made pump puller/slide hammer out of long bolts (cheap). If you rebuild the OD section your self you'll need a press. Calipers and snapring pliers are the only other 'special tools' I remember.



Now I'm more scared of rebuilding my D70 rear end than I am the transmission. :-laf

There seem to be four transmissions that are recommend more then others. I don't have all the names but you should be able to find them by doing a search of the discussion forums. Two of them are ATS and DTT. My daughter has an ATS in her 96 and I have a DTT in my 97. We have had some problems with the 96 and ATS have been really good to work with. Because of when the problem occurred and the nature of the problems, we weren't sure if they were transmission problems or something else. ATS really stood behind their product and helped us correct our problems. None of the problems we have had were caused by the ATS transmission.



I've had my DTT transmission for only a couple of months and I've been really happy with it. I'd buy another.

Bellflower Trans in Bellflower, California installed an ATS trans, converter and controller for me a couple three years ago. The truck now has 60K on the transmission and working great. I can recommend them and the ATS highly.

Phoenix transmission's

I'm looking at Phoenix too, at $1895 (plus $260 round trip shipping to any business address) for their "Extreme", for the trranny with a billet converter, it is hard to beat. The Extreme has all sort of beefed up items: a 5-pinion OD, Transco shift kit, billet torque converter, HP clutches, HD valve body etc... ...



They offer rebuilt RH transmission's ranging from $895 to $1895. They are selling wholesale.



I do like the option of rebuilding my own unit though, I think I'll look closer at that.
