Archived HELP!!! Won't start

Archived Need quick help

I woke up this morning & went out to start my truck. I have some weak batteries, so I had to give it a jump. (I did not start it yesterday). It turns over ok but will not fire. Fuel pressure gauge is showing pressure when I turn the key but no fire. Where do I start? It has about 75,000 miles on it. Not that cold this morning (about 25 deg. ) The last time I ran it (two days ago) it was just fine. This is my work truck, so I am in a bind! Can anyone help?

Thanks

Frank

Do you use a pour point additive? I think the cloud point is somewhere around your 25*. You could have a plugged ff or fuel lines. I would bet that when the temperature warms up it will start. You will need reasonably strong batteries though.

Lp on the frame or on the engine? Big line kit? Banjos? How has your fp been when it was running? Maybe lp is not sucking the fuel up if the lp is in orgional engine mounted position. Maybe pressurizing the tank while cranking would get the fuel to the VP44.

Charging batteries now. No additives used. I did notice, when I tried to start again that on the dash the engine light is on (the little icon which looks like a engine in yellow). I know that all icons on the dash come on when you cycle the key but the engine light(if that is what it is) stayed on. Does that mean that it through a code? Sorry if I sound stupid. Never had a major problem like this?

Thanks

Frank

Also, LP on the frame. All stock. My fuel pressure gauge is tapped in at the VP44. Shows pressure when key is cycled.

Changed fuel filter. Primed and tried to start again. Still no go. Tried WD 40. No fire. Not even a hick up. Running out of options. Might HAVE TO bring to the dealership. Don't want to. Anything else I can check before I make a call?

Thanks

Frank

Cycled the key three times. Code reads P 1693. (I guess that is what it reads. Shows up in the odometer readout. ) Is that the code? Sorry, I know it is a dumb question.

I think 1693 is a nusicense code unless it is paired with something else.

Your fp gauge shows what kind of fp when you cycle the key to start?

If you want put yout ph# in the next post and I'll call you.

Bob Weis

FP reads 10 psi when key is cycled. Pressure gauge is hooked into VP44 via the schraider valve. Phone # is 248-830-9294 if you would like to call.

Thanks for all the help.

I called Frank and he is on the phone right now,

His lp is stock on the engine. It did not electrically cycle when he turned the key to start. He is checking the electrical connections right now.

Please input your thoughts

no fuel at the vp44 yet

we are trying to pressurize the tank with air pressure to see if we can get fuel to the vp

the lp connections were lightly greased and no lp

so far we have some fuel at the vp banjo. lp is NOT pumping. air pressure to the tank pushed fuel to the vp banjo. cracked #1 injector line trying to get fuel through the VP44. no fuel at the #1 line

ideas?

he did get a "dead pedal" about 2 years ago, but truck has run fine since.

looks to me like a fuel delivery problem, but at this point he is calling the dealership. his fp gauge is on the banjo at the vp and it has intermittently read 2 - 5 psi erratically.

truck is totally stock except for gauges. 65000 miles under warrantee.

he will report back here when dealership figueres out the problem

I called the dealership, they said that the warrantee on diesels are 5 years/100,000 miles. I am at 76,000 miles and my 5 years were up on 6/05. So I did not bring it to the dealership, instead I brought it to a local shop who works on Cummins. He put a code reader on it and said that the VP 44 is shot. Will cost about $1750 for parts and about $800 - $900 for labor.

I had the truck in (to the dealership) to replace a bad lift pump about 2 years ago under warrantee. My question is do I have a leg to stand on with Dodge and try to see if they will cover the repairs (with some fighting I'm sure) or am I SOL. I am out of warrantee about 8 months, but had a bad lift pump in the past. Would that carry any weight? Does anyone know who I would call to listen to me.

I am looking at about a $2800. 00 repair bill. Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone can give advice, it would be helpful.

Thanks,

Frank
