I changed out my fuel filter on my 98. 5 and found my lift pump was bad. I replaced the lift pump, bleed the lines to the injector pump, ran the lift pump through the 30 sec cycle about 10 times, then tried to start it--wouldn't even hit. then i cracked 3 injector lines and after cycling the lift pump 10 more times cranked it over to bleed the air out of the lines while holding the throttle to the floor. did this about 3 times for about 10 seconds each time. the engine hit a few times and about started. so I closed the lines and tried to start it, wouldn't fire at all. it looked like only a few dribbles came out of the lines. i then noticed the next time i tried to cycle the lift pump it ran smooth like there wasn't any pressure held. so i cycled it about 5 more times before it sounded like it was working against a load. re did everything stated above with no luck. any ideas.....
 
Check the connections on your LP (banjo). Also try opening the lid on the fuel filter until fuel starts to run, then do the injector lines again, keep at it until you have fuel a little more than dripping out, not bubbles.



You do have fuel in the tank don't ya?
 
sticks, the banjo's arn't leaking fuel, the lift pump is getting fuel to the filter(its full, i bleed it at the test port , appears to have good pressure) and beyond to the banjo to the injector pump--should the lines hold pressure between the injector pump and the lift pump after the pump has shut off?
 
When you say test port, you have a pre 2001 truck?



The fuel lines will hold pressure for a few seconds after the system shuts down. It will eventually equalize through the fuel return line and the back pressure through the LP. It may retain 3 or 4 psi for longer (minutes to hours) depending on where the vanes in the LP stopped.

YEP ;) :cool:

As a waaay outside chance Pop off your fuel fill cap on the tank. The vent on the sending uit cap may be clogged and the LP is fighting against slight tank vacuum. Granted the filter may be full but until the system is totally fueld ... ... . Again way outside chance here.
 
well i finally got it started--i cracked 3 injector lines, bumped the starter(to set the 20 second lift pump run ) about 30 times in a row with no delay in between, then i cranked it over with the throttle to the floor--it hit a few times and then lit off--i had my wife keep it running while i carefully closed the injector lines. . took it for a spin and it felt like it had about 50 more horse than before. . i guess the lift pump was bad when i bought it about 3000 miles ago. . anyway i want to thank you all for the tips
 
to bleed the lines-you just crack the nuts you can get to(1,3,4,5&6 usually 3 & 4 work or 1,3 &4, but sometimes you need to do all the ones you can get to) and bump the starter to engage the lift pump so it runs for its 20-30 second time--then shut off and repeat---do this until fuel is seen coming from the injector line nuts--tighten the nuts when you get 3 emitting fuel--then crank the engine over for 10 secs and stop for 30-45 secs and repeat until she starts--you usually don't need to depress the pedal--chris
