I have an '06 3500 CTD. It just started missing going down the road and I noticed it was smoking some. Started running rough. It threw code P302, misfire number 2. Is it an injector or what do you experienced guys think? Of course it is hundreds of miles from home !!!!!!

Stop it asap and don't drive it until you identify what is going on. Check your engine oil level for overfull and for the smell of diesel fuel. That is most important because if an injector has stuck open and is overfueling it will melt a piston and wipe out an engines.

If the injector is not fueling you may be able to limp it home but a tow truck may be a wiser solution.

No overfull oil level nor diesel smell. oil level same as it was this morning before starting. Have stopped it to wait until Monday to go tothe Cummins place.

I carry a block-off fitting in my truck in case of an issue like this. At least I could continue with one injector not fueled.

yeah. . if its not overfueling, I would dose it up with some 2 stroke oil and see if it will go home. Capping off #2 and disconnecting the injector wire will get you home too...

Do you guys think it would be an injector? Is it safe to run it? What else could it be?

I don't have any idea what code P302 translates to but with the symptoms you describe it almost has to be an injector.

What color was the smoke?

It was a blue gray smoke.

You didn't tell us many details that would be helpful. Miles on odometer? You the original owner? What kind of service history? Use of K&N or other screen door air filter? Other modifications. I'm not a mechanic but a little blue gray smoke is not an indication of an injector stuck open.

The code tells you it is a misfire on #2. Could be a mechanicla problem with the injector, or, more likely a a solenoid failing or possibly a bad wir ein the VC harness. You would need to Ohm th einjector and or harness to tell for sure.

When the injector does not fire on time you get unburned fuel coming thru as as smoke. It could be firing late and or sticking open and firing late. Its hard to tell but it could damage things if you run it to much.

Had this happen to me. The braided stainless line for my oil pressure guage had rubbed a bare spot on the injector wire harness at the back of the valve cover. Taped it up and have had no more problems out of it.

I had the same problem, but just on start up..... what worked for me was putting in diesel kleen ( power service ) fuel additive in the grey bottle... buy at walmart... cleaned it right up after a few miles... I think it cleaned my injector... . I use to use standyne... but it did not work until i used diesel kleen, smells the same, but I dont think it works as well... try it and hopefully it works
