My alternator is putting out to mutch juice. I need to know if there is a internal regulator or external regulator and eney ideas on priceof a new alternator? Your help is very app. Justin:(

Regulator position

Most likely the regulator is junk. Look on the firewall slightly to the left of center. It will be a thin rectangular box. Look at the connector and make sure the terminals fit tight on the pins on the regulator. Make sure the regulator is grounding to the body also. If it needs replacing spend the extra cash and get a good one (i. e. Borg Warner Select, Standard, Echlin, etc... ) Hope this helps.

Are you sure there isn't a short in the battery? That can cause the charging system to try and overcome the low voltage. Have the battery tested with a load device. Just a thought.

Voltage Regulator

The voltage regulator is built into the engine controller on your truck. Not to often that they go bad, possibly you have a bad ground and the regualtor is not seeing the correct voltage.

There is a proceedure to check this out in the service manual.

Actually your alternator is controlled by the electronic engine controller loacated behind the battery. As Paccool suggested get the battery checked for a short, then the other items suggested by the manual is a grounded alternator field wire or field terminal or connections. So that means have the alternator tested at your parts store and if the alternater and battery are good that leaves the wiring as the fault or possible the engine controller. Check for any grounded wires. The two you need to look for are the two that come out of the plastic body (located at the alternator) parallel to each other, they may be labeled terminals B & C . I wish I had a scanner I would put up a diagram of the charging system. I hope this helps.

This same weird situation happened to me. First try to clean the connector that goes into the computer... . I lost a bet with my Dad on that one, but it fixed the problem for a lot less the $250. 00

Oh, used brake cleaner to clean the connector.

Good Luck,

Russell

i am wrong

I thought this was the problem. Cause last night I was getting a burnt smell inside the truck, like wires to gather. Then some smoke started coming out around the light switch. I thought the alt was putting out to mutch juice. but today I looked ad had the alt checked and it is good and I think this might be the head light switch. But the bad thing is it wont do it now. Has eney body else had this problem?????:( ;)

Head light switch/connector fry is a common problem, search the 1st gen forum on that subject or even on my name, you'll find alot of info even the p/n for the repair kit to fix this.

Thanks
