Took the truck to have the oil changed and the drain plug now leaks, leaves a large puddle. Went to the stealer and got a new gasket, and it leaks also. It seems the gasket will not cover the four indentations around the drain plug. What are you guys using? Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it?

Is there a better gasket available? If from the stealer what is the part number. My truck is a 96 CTD:( :( :(

Mine is a 99 but there are no indentations on the pan, the gasket seals on the flat surface. Are you sure they did not crack the plug flange by over tightening it?

My money says who ever changed the oil used a air tool to tighten the plug... ..... I'd make it their problem... ... ..... then... ... . after I smacked him around for a while... ... I'd shove that impact gun up his kazoo... ... ... ..... I was just sayin' what you guys were thinkin' if it was your truck... ... ... ...

I had that problem. The previous owner did something that scratched the sealing surface on the pan.

Here is what I did.

Bought a new plug and took it to a machine shop. They charged me $20 to turn down the outer diameter . 240" and radius the edge.

Now it is the same diameter as the stock Cummins plug and works perfect without all that tightening of the stock Dodge plug.

The Cummins plug works BUT it is not long enough to engage more than a couple of threads in the pan and will leave you uncomfortable about possible stripping of the threads.

With my new and improved drain plug those washers last multiple changes also.

Don't worry about reusing your fresh oil, I just drained into a clean bucket and poured her right back in.

Hope this helped.

Get the Geno's drain valve and do it yourself from now on. A friend took his Pathfinder to a quicky lube place and the next day he found the path allright... of oil... on the freeway! They ate it.

NOBODY loves your truck like you do!;)

Jsmith,

I know this sound silly, but I though someone said a few days ago to filp the gasket and it will seal? Try it and report back to us.

I had the same problem...

Same dimples, as I recall there was a TSB or something and Cummins was replacing oil pans. I thought it was limited to earlier '94's but you must have gotten lucky.

I did what you did but in order to get it to seal I ended up over tightening the plug. How much? I never put a torque wrench on it but I did use my 1/2" breaker bar. I saw the bottom section of the pan start to twist before I deflected the seal enough to fill the dimples. :--)

This was just before folks started shearing off the flange on the stock drain plug, I guess I got lucky!

My solution was to buy the HD drain plug from Geno's and install it the next time I drained the oil. I had just switched to Amsoil with a bypass for the extended drain thing so I figured it would be a while. The new plug is still sitting by my phone so I can find it when I do drain the oil.

Maybe we could get Mag Hytech to make an oil pan!!

Went to the stealer and got a new plug. The shop pulled the old plug and it has a hair line crack at the base. It was over tightened. I will be getting my money back for the gasket and plug. :D :D

I will also order a new plug from Geno`s, as soon as I get off the forum. Thanks guys ;)
