Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Help!

I got the new crank seal from cummins this morning. Came home and started taking things apart. Pulled the fan and harmonic balancer. Then I took off the fan pulley and a sensor that was on two studs right beside the belt idler pulley. What is this sensor and does it need to have a certain adjustment when reinstalled?

KDP strikes again

Well when i pulled the timing gear cover off the kdp and a piece of the case on the floor. I guess I waited too long to kill it, went to cummins and ordered a new case. I was surprised at the price, $102, I was expecting at least $300. Anyway the case will be here Tuesday. Anyone who has not killed the KDP DO IT ASAP!!!!!!! It will save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

This is the RPM pickup sensor. I believe that the correct adjustment is . 049 to . 051.

That's the tach pickup. The adjusment is . 052 if I remember correctly. Use a brass or aluminum feeler gage to adjust it. The adjustment is not critical so close is ok. If the tach works you are ok.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you use a steel feeler gauge?

I believe that the sensor also is the pickup for the cruise control. After I did my KDP I didn't set mine properly and my cruise would not work until I spaced it properly.

OK, so can you use a steel feeler gauge if the battery cables are disconnected, or doesn't that make any difference?



And - if you absolutely have to use brass or aluminum where do you buy one? I've looked with no success.



BTW, I think Illflem said he uses a credit card. Suppose he was serious??? Anybody ever put a micrometer to a credit card???

I had a piece of aluminum scrap. I checked it with my mic. It was a little too thick so I pounded on it until it was close. That worked as a feeler gage just fine.

I used a micrometer to check things around my shop to find something nonmagnetic to use as a feeler guage. It turned out that the cardboard of Cummins box that the crank seal came in was close enough. For perspective, a piece of thick Xerox paper, almost cardstock, but not quite, is about 0. 010 inches thick.



A credit card would also work, but not the part embossed with numbers. It's not a critical application. If the sensor doesn't interfere and grind off in shreds, and the tachometer works, all is OK.

Well, I did find a brass gauge yesterday. $2. 98 @ Discount Auto Parts. Has 6 blades, 3 of which add up to . 050".
