Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) I Can Smell Fuel

01, HO, 6 speed. Van Aaken & Edge, OEM injectors.

On really cold mornings (25-30F), only while coasting down hill the truck "bucks". Just like a bad miss in a gasser.

This goes away after 10 miles.

Since I am coasting there is no fuel being injected.

It was suggested that a tight (soon to fail) u-joint could cause this.

Any ideas?

I doubt it would be a U joint, and then go away. I had a truck that would do something like that only when I let out of the throttle. U joints were bad. But, it happened every time... .

I hope for your sake that I am wrong, but that sounds EXACTLY like the symptoms I had just before the last VP failure. It did wierd things once in a while for several months, but no codes. A few days after it started "missing", it set a code. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was an internal timing failure... something electronic. Keep checking for codes... you probably will get some soon.

Could be time to change the trans fluid? I am guessing that when cold the fluid is thick (Duh) and is not meshing thru the gears like a warmer fluid would. That may be causing a condition that may resemle a fluid backlash effect?
