STOCK 07 clutch slipping

Mine is a 2004. 5 6-speed manual with 185,000+ miles. Came to a stop and found the idle bounce from 500-1000 and then seem to settle with what seemed like more vibration. Stopped and drained some fuel from fuel bowl. Started up ok and went to next stop and again idle bounced from 500-1000 and then settled. Shut off and did my thing. Drained a little more fuel from the bowl. Restarted ok(seemingly) and went to my next destination and got the idle bounce again. Shut off and this time no start. Towed back. Install new lift(original stock one still in use) and this time no start with occasional small catch like it wants too. I have rail pressure guage on its way. I am hoping for input from those that know about what I can do now to isolate the cause and or part failure. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Forgot to add no stored codes and absolutely prefectly running until this. On my way to test the fuel control actuator and see if it will start.

i would beleive a CPS would throw a code

assuming you only did DD nozzles?

id check fca and pressure relief on the rail. the rail Pressure gauge should tell ya too if you are having excessive return rates(low psi cranking)

185K on stock bodies is a fair run especialy with an ez jacking rail psi

BTW

DID YA TRY IT WITHOUT THE EZ?? it could be bad

Thanks for the pm on the replacement injectors. The mods listed are on the 2000. The problem I am having now is on the 2004. 5 and is bone stock. Now it is my understanding that by disconnecting the electrical to the fca and if the truck starts then the FCA is bad. I unplugged the FCA and tried to start but no start... brief catch but no start. Am I correct that the FCA can be ruled out?

Andres: You talking about any addon goodies ? With the exception of the utility body, this thing is bone stock. I was really hoping it was the lift pump but alas no.

I just now ran a key on key off check for codes and found a P0251 that was not there from last night, but I have to believe that came up because I tried to start it with the FCA wiring unplugged. This has been a really bad week.

Andres: Thanks again for the PM and I am going to try the overpressure valve tomorrow. Hopefully the raingods will leave us alone.

Blacksheepdiesel: I will try the ether(with grids disconnected) tomorrow also and thanks for the input.

update

Installed the Isspro rail pressure guage and while cranking the guage would build from 0 to 5-8000 and fluctuate during the cranking process. The closer it got to 10,000 the more it wanted to start but would not.

Did you pull the pressure relief valve and see if anything is leaking there. I forget what size it is, but maybe find something to plug in there on a temp basis to see if thats related to your problems. I've had mine plugged for a year now with no adverse results.

The pressure relief valve(overpressure valve??) has the banjo bolt that goes into top of rail?? It kinda sucks when you do not have an exploded view on the parts you are trying to locate.

This whole thing is frustrating due to having to deal with rainshowers while trying to work on this thing. Just add to the mystery, I unplugged the FCA and checked rail pressure and it shot to 25000.

Everything I have read says no, but is it possible to get air in the injectors and prevent the startup?

N Dennis

PS: still no codes other than P0251 that I got after unplugging the FCA.

In testing the overflow valve on the common rail, I saw a pretty good trickle coming out of the line but not out of the valve itself. Pressure still pushed towards 10,000 but no start.

Did you try the SHORT, SHORT shot of ether with the grid heater disconnected? The engine will not fire on ether only, it also has to be getting some fuel.

Godspeed,
Trent

Blacksheepdiesel:

I am going to do that tomorrow, weather gods permitting. Where do you recommend introducing the ether? The hose between the air cleaner and turbo air intake???
