Injectors not being told to fire??? Any new codes??

Hhhmmmm. Wondering if the crank sensor is bad??? Doesn't the ecm need a signal from it before it can start??? I believe so. Others with more experience with CR engines need to chime in here, I am just cutting me teeth on them having been a 24v man for a long time.

Blacksheepdiesel:

Would a crank sensor failure show a code? During cranking, it would tease me with a slight catch. This morning, I disconnected the heating grid and gave a shot of starter fluid into the turbo intake hose after the filter. I had my SO watch the tailpipe as I cranked it over and there was definitely white whisps of smoke. Not alot but it was there and seeped out after I stopped cranking and got out to look myself. I took a look at the crank sensor and with exception of some crud on it, the wiring looked good and nothing obviously wrong. Looks pretty easy to replace.

MMeier:

If there is a test for the crank sensor, I would love to know how.

Andres:

Took the hose off the air cleaner and shot it in there. Almost started but just teasing me again. GF saw white whisps of smoke from the tailpipe and a weird smell.

So I got up this am and decided, due to time on the motor, I am just gonna bite the bullet and pull the injectors and replace. I spent about 2. 5 hours stripping and marking the parts. Of course it started raining during it all and had to break out the tarp. Took a lunch break, then another 1. 5 hours removing the actual injectors. First 2 were clean with a little corrosion on the injector body; #3 had a lot of carbon on the tip; #4 was a female dog to pop out and had carbon on the tip; #5 & #6 were easy and clean.

I hope I don't live to regret doing this when it comes time to install.

I don't know if I would 've pulled the injectors just yet. Make sure you know whats going on when you put them back in. So, are you going to take them in somewhere and get them checked ? Seems to be that on the older trucks, you would not see the tach move when you would turn it over if the crank sensor was bad. Have to go see if mine does tomorrow or not, if I can get it to turn over long enough without lighting it off.

MMeier:

Unfortunately, I am already committed to this. Since they are already pulled, I will put new ones in. I put 40,000 miles on it last year and I lost a weeks work. The white smoke and weird smell kinda pushed me over the edge today. Will work out of the 2000 CTD I have. I seem to recall the RPM guage moving while cranking, but old age, poor eyesight and wishfull thinking maybe made me hallucinate.

Blacksheepdiesel:

I am kind of pressed for time and since I am taking them out after 185000 miles, I am not looking to reinstall them even if they pass. I am already commtted to installing new ones and will hopefully get it back together this weekend.

sorry bout the last post didnt notice the 1st line of yer sig is a 2nd gen

i think your making a good choice, even with the outside chance its something else at 185K on injectors in a 3rd gen your on borrowed time

hopefuly you can find new ones

get some good directions and pay very close attention on the reinstall process in them

I used the ones tandc diesel had on there site IMHO the one in my service manual sucks and will leave you with loost connector tubes

ryecreek:

Todd at T&C says they should arrive on Friday and looks like I will be installing this weekend. Weather is supposed to cooperate, so maybe I won't have to work by droplight under a tarp.

Update

Spent Saturday and Sunday installing the new injectors. After a relatively short period of cranking time, it fired right up with a nice anti-mosquito fog. Thanks Todd for your help.
