I just wanted to get your feelings on what you would do if you were in my shoes.

Based on my mods listed in my signature. I run more fuel through my engine in 5,000 miles than a stock engine would.

My oil change interval is 5,000 and I run Royal purple.

If you were me would you :

a) change to rotella 15w40 oil and change oil every 2500 miles?

b) continue royal purple at the 5,000 mile interval?

c) install a bypass oil filter system to clean oil more often

d) keep the royal purple and 5,000 mile interval

Do you think I would protect my engine more by switching to a conventional oil and changing it more frequently due to the fact that I fuel pretty hard?

Just let me know what you think. I am trying to decide which way to go. I may need to just do an oil analysis. What company would you recommend to do an oil analysis?

thanks

Oh, someone told me royal purple had moly in it. Im clueless?

Even with your mods you're still running a lot less fuel than heavy pullers. In 5000 miles I'll burn almost 500 gallons. I change my oil at 10-12K and whenever I do sample it, it always comes back good.

Just me thinkin out loud---I don't think the amount of fuel burned is the issue. Probably the amount of unburned fuel you're dumping has more effect. Excessive EGT's?

If you're fueling hard and want the protection, synthetic is the way to go, and add bypass to clean it up. 5000 miles is too soon to change, with bypass run it 15-20k with a couple samples per change.

I have a good friend that has a 99 Ferd (sorry) but anyway he had 415,000 mile on the clock when he tore it down for a cracked piston. It is modded pretty good (hypermax stuff) but anyway all he had ever run is Shell Rotella 15w-40 and the bearings showed hardly no wear and the cylinders still had cross hatch almost as good as new. And I know for a fact that there was times that is was over 15k miles before it got an oil change. So that has to be saying something about the quality of Rotella.

But back to your question, if it was me, I would run a good diesel oil and keep it changed more often. Then you know the soot is out.

Do analysis at 5000 on your current oil, and follow their reccomendation. I'm sure they'll tell you to keep it in a little longer, maybe 10K.

You can by-pass filter the oil all you want and it's still not going to get out the fuel leaking past the rings. It will help clean the soot and particulate matter but it's not going to remove the unburned fuel and combustion contaminates that lead to acid formation.

I think unless you're going crazy and super overfueling it in competition unburned fuel isn't going to be a problem. Luckily diesel combustion doesn't create nearly as much acid formation and water as the combustion of gasoline does.

thanks to you all !! I think I am going to stay with Royal Purple 15w40 or switch to rotella 15w40.

I don't think I can go wrong either way

I agree with Cattletrkr, "Blends" are not worth it. The biggest share of a quart of oil is the "Base stock". How much of the "base stock" is synthetic, and how much of it is petrolium? One never knows, and the producers will not tell you! Most people assume a "Blend" is 50/50, but it is not true!

One of my buddies was using delo 400 and he switched to partial synthetic Mystik like I use and his fuel milage got better. I dont think I agree they're worthless. Oo.

Now see, here is some real world proof ... ... ... How much did his mileage improve? How often did he change his oil? Did he tow or daily drive?

JoelMartin, give us the answers that we craveOo.

I will ask him how much it improved and post it later. I think he changes it every 3,000 miles and all he does with it is deliver minibarns. He hauls mostly in the Grapevine area so it is a lot of hard pulling and its completely stock as far as I know. :)

In the latest issue Martin says that he wouldn't cross the street to get a free crankcase of Rotella T CJ-4, but liked the synthetic Rotella CI-4 plus.

Excuse me. I looked up to see the previous post. I did not mean to speak of you Mr Martin in the 3rd person in your presence.

It's been stated in the TDR to basically only use the CJ spec if you have to i. e. in your 6. 7. Otherwise stay with the CI as long as you can find it.

Oil debates are like talking, religion there is no real winning viewpoint. However there are a few facts shown in virgin oil analyses that may sway you one way or another. Looking at the 3 main dino oils, Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac 1300 and Chevron Delo 400, they all have close to the same amounts of Calcium, Phosphorus and Zinc added in. Delvac and Delo have some Boron and Moly in them with Delo having the most by far. This could be a reason for going with Delo.
