I had it done back in '01 ( with the "fiberglass" re-inforcement (meshwork, like rebar to concrete).
I, completely, agree with what others have said. Take it easy so you don't have an "instant replay" of the surgery.
The discomfort I noticed was more like an "ache" than a sharp, stabbing pain. I found it was controlable with just Advil.
Getting out of bed may be a problem. Sitting up uses your abdominal muscles & that is what has been compromised. I found that having the handlebars from an exercycle right next to the bed REALLY helped in getting out of bed. Otherwise, you have to ROLL out of bed.
I, also, found that a Lazyboy type recliner was the most comfortable type of chair to sit in. You can rock it forward & it helps LAUNCH you out of the chair, so you don't have to use your abdominal muscles as much. I even spent a few nights sleeping in that chair.
The Doctor told me to stay away from work for at least 10 days. I had the surgery on a Friday afternoon & a week later, my employees were so far behind that I had to go back on Saturday. Worked a LONG day. I was a Dental Lab owner so a lot of the work was sitting at a bench. Sunday, I worked about 8 hours & finally it started to get to me & I had to go home. Monday, I started to feel better & was quite productive. As much as you want to, don't overdue it!!! I'd be VERY CAREFUL about bending over fenders & pulling heavy parts. My Doctor told me to take the necessary time to heal & that he did NOT want to have to do his work again, on me. He went on to say that the second time was MUCH worse than the first. That's all I needed to hear.
Best of luck with your surgery.
