On September 26, 2001 K9 Git Ander was shot and killed in the line of duty during an incident while attempting to apprehend three suspects fleeing from a dumped stolen auto subsequent to a pursuit.
Git Ander, an 8 ½ year old German Shepherd, was Sergeant Gillespies loyal partner for seven years. Git lived with him and his wife, four daughters, 10, 9, 7, 5 and one son, 2, during this time. Git had an amazing record of service. He served at the World Trade Center in New York on many occasions after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. He was gentle and mild-mannered making him a favorite at local schools and nursing homes. John and his wife, Allison, and children were devastated by the death of their friend and family member.
