Hey guys,

I drove from Texas to Kentucky (thats a long freakin drive in two days), and back this weekend towing a 20' car hauler. Going up it was empty and coming back it was loafed with a Jeep CJ-7.

Problem is on the way up, a couple hundred miles from home my truck began stumbling and hesitating at certain speeds or RPM's. At first I thought it was because I was in 5th (NV4500) going up a slight grade, thrn I thought, "wait, i'm not in my 6 cylinder ford, so it shouldn't be doing this". It did this sporadically, but usually at about 2k RPMs or around 70mph. If you would get into the go pedal it would clear up, it was in cruise sometimes and sometimes not when it did this.

On the way back it was more noticiable and happened much more (due to the load on the trailer). It happened in either 4th or 5th and around 2k RPM's. It seemed to happen more right after I filled up the tank, and then lessened out.

My truck has never done this in everyday driving and it was frustrating and nerve racking to say the least.

I'm assuming from past posts I have read that this is a lift pump problem? I know little about diesels since I'm a diesel newbie, but it appeared to be starving for fuel, and from what I gather, the lift pumps aren't that great on these models, true?

Is there anything else that would be more likely to cause this problem? I'm going to take it to the stealership this week and make them fix this under the extended warranty I bought from my credit union when i bought the truck.

Its a 2001 24v CTD, 4500 trans, 55k miles, regular cab LWB 4x4 (no bombs yet).

thanks for the help, and if theres anything else I should have them tweak or fix while I'm there, please let me know.

Your covered under the factory warranty. Just give them the problem and let them fix it. Make sure they check you lift pump pressure.

how long is factory warranty? I have 55k and was told when I bought it used that the factory warranty was on 36k... I do have the extended warranty I bought, if thats what you mean...

Kerry,

You should have a 5yr/100K mile warranty on the engine... the lift pump is covered under that warranty. I would venture a guess that if the problem is diagnosed to be engine related (ie lift pump, VP44, APPS) then it should be covered. If it's related to another part of the drivetrain (ie transmission, rear end, both doubtful) then it would probably be covered by your extended warranty.

I make the above comments based on the fact that you say you haven't BOMB'ed your truck yet.

HTH.
