Hey Canadians...

I just took a job that will involve me working and living in far northern Canada for the next couple years. I will be based out of Yellowknife starting this fall and of course I am planning on bringing my trusty Dodge with me. I know there are a few of you Canadians on the site so my questions are... .



Does anybody know what it takes to get a US truck registered over there? Is there emmissions I need to worry about? Of course I've messed with my "emmissions equipment", the intercooler being the most obvious.



I know where to find cummins parts, but how 'bout parts for old Dodges? Any good parts shops with reasonable shipping? Yeah I know, it's alot of questions, I'm just trying to minimize learning things the hard way for a change. Any hints and pointers would be appreciated.

I'm in Vancouver & have brought many many cars & trucks from the US into Canada but I believe it's different for you since you are moving here.

For us to import a truck like yours it needs to be inspected by both the province & fedral inspection licensed garage.

You pay a $180 Canadian at the border for the Federal inspection+7%GST on the purchase price. You then wait one week to get your paperwork from Ottawa before you can go for the inspection. Then you pay roughly $75 for the Provincial inspection & once both inspections are passed you go to an Autoplan & register your truck & pay 7. 5% provincial tax in British Columbia.

Sounds like a big hassle right?

I believe you can leave your US plates on for the time being & something tells me it's much easier for you since you already own the truck & are essentially immigrating.

Phone Canada Customs & they'll give you the story.

Oh... I don't believe there is any emission testing in Yellowknife... you can run a straight 5" pipe with no muffler & they prefer trucks there with a gun rack in the back window!

Ouch, doesn't sound like much fun. I'll be sure to give customs a call before I venture across the border. The canadian government sure likes its taxes don't they?



Speaking of gunracks... thats another issue I've got to look into.

You can bring your long guns with you, there is some red tape but not too bad I think. Again check with Canada Customs before departure. Don't even think about bringing handguns. In Canada only criminals are allowed to have them. without alot of hassle. If you are going to use your Cummins as a daily driver in Yellowknife I suggest an upgraded block heater or better yet an Espar. Gets a little chilly there. Great fishing & hunting though.

Actually Yellowknife is some distance SOUTH of where I usually winter. Currently I have block, oil pan, battery, and transmission heaters, I think that should do it.



I will certainly be bringing a fishing pole or two and my trusty . 375 H&H.

I'll see if there are any particular documents/forms/info needed as well as a contact number for you if I can.



Give me a few days to try and round this up. . OH, do NOT bring handguns... I know it's already been mentioned but it really is a loosing proposition here.

The other item related to firearms in Canada is, semi-automatic anything is also a no-no. At least that was the way it was when I drove through in 1991 and returned in 1998.

You should not have any major problem with semi-auto long guns.

Only the full auto is not permitted... unless you are a collector.

thank-goodness your going "to Canada"... ... ... ... I just bought a truck up there and you wouldn't believe what I have to do to get it here. The US laws are designed to allow Canadians to come here quite easily. I have to jump through hoops.
