After installing my dd stages 1's from HVAC I knew it ran better, but did not know how good untill I was hauling a 12,500lb 5th wheel north to Yreka ca. I was starting up a 6% grade about a mile long with 2 power strokes behind me from our club. As we started up the hill it was going a little slow and I told the others I needed to get my RPM's up and proceeded to take off up the hill . When I got to the top the 2 ford's were only half way up the hill and I had to waite for them to catch up . Man I love this truck. My egt's never got over 1050* and I had a lot more power left.

I found the DD stage I's to be quite nice even when I had no 'box' to tweak the fueling.

IMHO they are better with the wastegate and boost module modifications, but others may disagree.

(with the PE they are even better!!)
 
I agree with David - a modified elbow and some type of boost module really increase the power achievable by even the small injectors(275's, DDI's, etc. ).

OK guys- Question time- I'm stock except for DD1's and gages. Aside from SOP- what can you actually tell me about reductions in smoke and/or EGT with either boost module's (I would use DD's just for consistency) or a 4" mandrel bent exhaust- with muffler. I also tow #12,500 at times. I really don't want anymore noise- Mark at TST is pretty convincing about the merits of the stock ex. I would like some more EGT margin and if I had more towing power it wouldn't hurt my feelings either!

On my truck, when I was between my VA module sale and the PE delivery and installation, I was running as follows:

DDI's, DD boost module, DD elbow.

Since you are not interested in SOP input, I will tell you that my 5spd had no problem getting 30-32 psi boost.

I think others will tell you the merits of extra boost vs EGT (there is a formula that escapes me).

Unfortunatly my EGT gauge sensor was out during that time so I can't give you temps. I am about to embark on a nice cross country run and will compile some data in the process.

My new data will be with the EDGE's boost module, so will be a bit off from the DD's. I will be sure to run with and without the PE fueling being on.

I can tell you I am seeing more boost with the PE then I ever saw with the VA.
 
Welcome to the BB rockcrawler, did you find out if Sonny knows if I can run a T-18 with a cummins 4BT?
David VT I am interested in your data as well, I am about to bomb and am leaning towards the DDI's, boost module, K+N RE0880, and 4 inch exhaust to start with, this should keep the EGT's way down and after I get the transmission built up I can get a edge box later. I believe my 2001 has the 9cm housing, how do I install an elbow? I believe mine is fixed not screw in. I'd go look at it but I'm overseas on business right now

Hey guys here is some food for thought. Whenever you get into anykind of Bombing whether it be for towing or HVACing (commonly known as all out) you will always have to keep an eye on the egt and modulate your right foot to control. If you can hold your foot right to the floor and not over EGT at any time I don't think you will be happy with the power. Just my 2 cents worth but think about it.

Turbo-D- Have not reached Soni yet- always a challenge to pin him down but will try again tonight. On the July cover of Petrson's 4-Wheel & off road is a 3. 9 powered CJ-5- I know soni met this guy so he may have some info too. Don't give up on me! Just got a green light to go to Farmington NM for a competition in Mid August- wish me luck!!

Good luck ROCKCRAWLER, I'm certainly jealous, I am installing many new goodies on my jeep and can't wait to hit Tellico again. I think someday I will move out west, those guys have it made!!! I saw the Issue you're talkin about, I just wish these Mags would get with it and do some detailed gas to diesel swaps, not just takin a pic of a jeep and saying it has a 3. 9 cummins.

Rockcrawler, what are your max egt readings? Do you have smoke? If so, how much smoke do you have at 5 psi boost or better?

I have a boost module you can try too if you like (you would need it with the elbow). Usually the addition of the elbow and module is not a consideration till one escalates to the Stage II injectors. But what the heck, let's get your first hand unbiased opinion!

HVAC-

Have seen 1200 pre-turbo, 3rd gear, higher rpm (3kish)pulling 8K on a hill- may have climbed higher but I up-upshifted. Have not done any serious pulling in fifth yet. Smoke is there- will make a concentrated effort this week to roll gentler to 5 lb boost before nailing the go-pedal and check for smoke. Running 20 lbs without any boost widgits- was 18 before DD1's. Would consider boost module or ex if I could quantify it.
