Is "red" diesel harmful?

Well-Used Cummins on e-bay

Saw in the Houston Chronicle yesterday that one of the new motor vehicle laws that took effect in Texas on September 1 prohibits "excessive smoke (defined as visible smoke in excess of 10 seconds duration)" from any motor vehicle operating on public roadways. 10 seconds - hmmm... . guess we need to carry a stopwatch so we can either build boost or back out before our time runs out! ;)

Seriously, maybe this will get some clapped-out oil burners off the roads. :)

Hey Rusty,

I posted that awhile back - there is actually a 1(800) # you can call to report violators. I personally like this - my truck smokes with low boost, but only for 2-3 seconds. I can't stand getting behind a worn-out gasser that's burning more oil than gas.

did you know....

There is another law in Houston that says a diesel engine can not idle for more then 5 minutes. I don't know if this applies to light-duty trucks only or what, but my uncle told me that one.

Hey Guys, I got one of those nice letters from the state awhile back. It was reported by someone that I was seen emmitting (sp) visible smoke. DDDDUUUUHHHHH. It was cold out, 40 ish, and cold for South Texas, when I was entering the freeway. My truck smokes a visible slight haze when it is not up to operating temp. Once up to temp, it only smokes till boost builds.

It requested that I send them (the State) a copy of the work done to eliminate the excessive smoking. I promptly thru the whole thing in the trash. I love it when I smoke out the folks behind me, especially when they get right on your behind and try to push you. I consider myself a conscience (sp nice) driver. I stay in the far right lane when I am traveling at posted speed limit, or pulling a trailer. I only go to the far left lane when I am ready to move with the flow, and in the Houston area that sometimes is 75 to 80 mph. But when some import with an impatient driver gets right on my butt, I let the smoke show begin. Again, the smoke I emitt is very slight but visible.

Oh well, I will continue to smoke until they buy me a new truck!!!

I see your busy tonight too Shrimpy. :) ;)

Mine smokes when I need it too. Get on my butt and your gonna get some if it. Heaven forbid you get behind me in slow moving traffic and get impatient. Start rolling in 2nd, quick shift to third at about 20 mph and drop the hammer. INSTANT SMOKE for the annoying little impatient riceboy. Got a couple while I was visiting your fine little town called Houston the last couple of weekend.

You got it Gitch, trying to keep the lower 48 awash in cheap dinasore (sp) remains!!!! Just today my 3 year old and I went to the store and a lady in a sub compact pulled up next to us as we were walking into the store. We did our thing and when we walked out to leave she and a friend were putting flyers on cars. She came over to her car and I was not paying attention, just putting my son in and trying to wrestle him into his car seat. Well since it was hot out I reached in and started the old beast. She had sat down in her car to wait on her friend, and you guessed it she had the window down and was dead level with my exhaust. I don't have a turn down, just the straight out look of the first gens.

My son was standing up in his car seat and I faintly heard a OOOHHH!!!! My son starts laughing so I turn and look and she is exiting the car rather quickly!!!! He (my son) is a stutterer, and starts trying to tell me what had happened!!!! She turns and walks away quickly, and my son says daddy you smoked her car!!!

It was not done on purpose, and was only a short burst, but for the faint of heart any small amount is to much!!!! Take care... .

I like to mess with a couple of guys here. When they're parked beside me in the lot. With the weather like it is, usually the 1st thing you do when getting in the truck is to roll the windows down so you can breathe. WELL, when I start up I accidentally(yeah right) give then a full throttle start. Talk about a cloud. It's all in fun though.

Beating my partners Dodge gasser, with him having a 100 ft run on me, was much more fun though.

As far as work goes, just sittin here looking at a tanker full of dino juice

Sounds like they've been hard at work in occupied Austin. Passing more laws for our own good  Keep pushing boys, you'll get a fight one of these days

I also got a notice in the mail right before I sold my 12 er. I had been in Austin and apparently emitted a slight amount of smoke. I would never do something like that and I hope that whoever the person was that I offended with my smoke is ok! I wouldn't want that person to be offended. There I feel better... ... . On second thought, **** on 'em! If they don't like it don't drive behind me! Thanks! Go Big Government!

this is upsetting..

I'm searching for a copy of the bill.

Basically the law will allow polluters

to be fined, which will "generate upwards

of $133 million anually". These funds

are not used to fix the emissions problem,

but for the local gov't to profit from it!

We should be reporting all of the old mercedes diesels that smoke. I figure they might have more "clout" and also would take some of the attention away from us.

How can a law like that be constitutional. If you are reported, you are guilty until you pay to have your vehicle tested to prove you are innocent. You could report people you are mad at. The state is talking about not letting you get your tags the next year until you pay to prove your vehicle is OK.

I agree. If we wanted to we could pick out any gasser and report them about excessive smoke. What a PITA it would be for everyone being reported.
