Both turning and pulling out the diaphram have the effect of pushing the pin in. Turning the diaphram rotates the cone towards the lean profile, which in turn pushes the pin back towards it's "hole". Perhaps it is just poping back in and getting stuck again. I think there is an O-Ring around that pin, on the inside. If the O-Ring is bagged it will cause the pin to "hang up" and get sticky. I don't know if you can replace just the O-Ring.

Has anyone done this?? Did you do it while the pump was on the truck??

Have you tried spraying silicone lube inside the pin/hole to see if that will help free it up. I'd first use a can of comressed air (like a "dust off" from radio shack" to blow out any junk then spray silicone lube from either end. Silicone won't deteriorate rubber.

It may "refresh" the O-Ring enough to let the pin move. Either way though I think it will need replacement sooner of later.

Just one question. Why does this truck only run 65-70? Mine is a 5 spd and it will top out over 95 mph. Are the autos that much slower or is this truck not opening up?? One 5pd I have driven with 4:10 gears topped out a little over 70. Am I missing something here??

BushWakr - I'll try the silicon lube if I get a couple of nice days this weekend. You're right about the pin, even just taking the cap off the AFC, the diaphragm pops up a little and that's enough to make the pin stick (and the truck not start). I've heard about a spring inside the pump that is supposed to push the pin out. Should that pin be behind the allen plug on the front of the AFC? When I removed the plug there was no spring and no evidence that there ever was one, so I'm curious.

MMiller - I hadn't thought about 4. 10 gears, my truck is marked as 3. 54's, but I'm not the original owner so it is possible that they've been changed. I do know that I am kinda disappointed with the top speed though - not that I'm big on speeding, I'd just like to know that I have it if I need it. ;)

I know I can count teeth on the ring gear to figure out the ratio, but I don't remember what to do with the count once I have it. Could someone please post how to calculate the ratio? Thanks in advance. Thanks too for the ideas about my truck.

Cheers,

Ray

A quick check for the rearend ratio:

Jack up the rearend and put transmission in neutral, parking brake off. Rotate the rear TIRES 1 turn and count how many times the driveshaft turns. Note: if you have a LSD this will be quite easy as both tires will turn the same, if you have an open diff, have someone hold one tire still while you rotate the other one two turns or have two people turn each tire one turn in the same direction.
