High Beam Troubles

About 2 month`s ago I had a passenger side headlight burn out & purchased a new set of bulbs at the local advance auto . Installed them with a little dielectric grease in the plug & no I did not touch the glass cause I know about the oil on your skin thing . Well they worked great for about 2 weeks and on my way home from work that night the right side flickered a couple of times on high beam & went out Well that`s about the same as driving with a flashlight compared to both of them working #@$%! The next morning when I got to my shop I popped that side out & tried a new bulb that I carry in my tool box for emergencies. Guess what no light on that side still #@$%! Checked voltage going to bulb on high & no voltage present with the Fluke meter. Have voltage every where else , so I got low beams & fog lights & a bug eye on high. Do not see a fuse & right now no one in my household knows where my service disc is that I had purchased from Geno`s Garage when I bought my truck. Does anyone no where it gets its power source or has anyone had this experience Thanks In Advance

The lights are controlled by the computer, if it doesn't detect resistance it stops the flow of voltage.

Mine done the same thing changed the tipm module and fixed it.

Others have reported failure of the TIPM. I think it is rather pricey.

Thanks for the response & pointing me in the right direction guy`s. But what the heck is a TIPM & is it something that is a dealer only item & about what does this part cost ? It`s get`s dark about 5:30 or 6:00 & I like my venison on the dinner table & not on my truck if you know what I mean. THANKS FOR READERS & ESPECIALLY THE RESPONDERS !!!!!

The TIPM is the Totally Integrated Power Module.

It has replaced the satndard fuse/relay box on all Dodge trucks manufactured from 2006 and upward. Insated of usinf fuses and mechanical relays, the TIPM use the ECM and circuitry to control almost all of the 12v electrical switching in your truck. When it gets toasted, it can be reset by the dealer (for a charge) sveral times, but after 3 or 4 times, it MUST be replaced to the tune of approx. $700.



The TIPM (and the associated lack of CANBus wiring) is one of the main

reasons that I am extremely glad I bought a 2005, which still has the regular fuse/relay box.

Thanks seafish for your feedback , and sorry it took me this long to let you know how much I appreciate it , but like most it`s been hectic with the holidays. Also thanks for the other thread links, as it gave me a definitive understanding of the 2 systems. So from what I gather I guess I need to call my dealer and see if they can flash it first ? If not it looks like my only option is to buy the part, because no matter how much I dislike it, it`s still cheaper than me getting a different truck.

High Beam Update

On Christmas eve when I started my truck to come home from work heard a chime & check engine light came on. Well today had someone to read codes with a smarty jr. & clear. Code came up as p2509 power down data lost errorCalled my local dealer to set up a diagnostics appointment for Thursday @ 8 a. m. while sitting in Advance Auto parking lot getting ready to go in & pay my account. When I walked back out I decided to start truck & check lights before I got back on road & was shocked to see that all are working properly What is strange is the check engine light did not come on until 6 weeks after the headlight problem started. Will call my dealer in a. m. & cancel appointment & hang on to that $95. 00 a little longerOo.

Well that's an easy fix. I'm wondering if maybe disconnecting the battery gorunds for 10 minutes would help your problem if it comes back, rather then simply replacing the tipm or having to pay the dealer to flash it. The absence of 12 volts for a short period of time forces the ECM into a reboot that often clears up small software bugs.
