2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission High Beams Don't Work......

I have a problem that just cropped up in my 96 truck. When I select my high beams ON they don't work. The blue indicator lamp on the dash shows them selected on but there is no illumination from the head lights. The low beams work fine. Also the fog lights work normal as they are illuminated when low beams are selected but extinguish when high beams selected... ... Any ideas?

Checking the wiring diagrams for the '96 gasser I used to have, it appears the dash indicator is wired directly to the high beam circuit, assuming you don't have DRL. If that works, there should be voltage at the headlamp connector. You can verify this with a voltmeter or test light. If no voltage, then I suspect your dimmer switch may be toast. If there is voltage and the grounds are good, I would check the bulb filaments. I know it's unlikely that both went out at the same time, but stranger things have happened. Does the flash-to-pass work? Let me know if you need me to scan some wiring diagrams for you.

Probably the multifunction switch... or high /lo switch. Pretty comon on DC stuff. Or maybe... . you truck is faster than light???? Awsome stats on your sig.....

The truck in my sig is my 2001. The one thats having the problems is my 96... ... . As for the flash to pass, the high beamsdo not illuminate then either. The dimmer switch works the dash lights just fine it just seems the high beams decided to quit. This truck did this one other time but they started working within a couple minutes, this time they have been out for several days.

According to my '99 wiring diagram... if the high beam indicator comes on it would be a wiring or filament problem, or if the high beam indicator doesn't come on then it looks like it would be the multifunction switch or a fuse. The later is the problem my truck currently has... . intermittantly. I know the '99's have a positive ground system but I believe the basic wiring scheme is the same as the '96. Does you truck have factory fogs? If so... . if the fogs stay on during the time your high beams should be on... . then that is another clue that it probably is the switch.

The truck has factory fog lamps and they work as they should. They are ON when the low beams are selected but extinguish upon high beam selection. So basically everything is working as it should except for having no high beams illuminate.

Although there is a 4' snowbank between me and my service manual... I believe the fog lamp relay is a normally closed one which is "activated" by the high beam switch to turn off the fog lights. So, what I remember is, if the fog lamps work as they should then the multifunction switch and wiring, at least out of the PDC, is good. I know this sounds stupid... but did you check the headlights to see if the high beam filaments are blown? On my Audi they would always blow together.

I haven't checked the filaments, but I will do that as soon as I get home tomorrow. Any other ideas are appreciated. Thanks guys.

The turn signal/high beam switch is notorious for going bad on these trucks. If you get the low beams and the relay is not bad then the switch in the column is probably the culprit. Let me know if one is needed as I know JB has a few wrecked early & late model second gens in the yard. Call me if you need me... ... ... Andy
