Friend's truck:

Truck: 2001 QC 4X4 Auto trans

Mods: DTT torque converter/valve body

DD Stage II's

TST Powermax

PDR HX35 w/12cm waste gated housing

Boost guage

stock exhaust

EGTs shoot up to 1200-1400 in a heartbeat with the powermax turned off! Truck can only maintain wide-open throttle for 2-3 seconds before EGTs are in the red zone (3rd gear, OD off). Overdrive is even worse.

Cruise no-load EGT at 70 mph is good (700 degress), but pull anything (even a four wheeler) and it cruises at 1000-1100!

These high temps are not normal for the truck, they have just begun occuring when the original turbo took a crap. I've installed the new turbo, but temps are very high. Is there a chance that the intercooler is clogged with turbo trash from the first turbo failure? The truck runs like a raped ape, but you can't stand on the throttle but for a few bursts before you've got to back out of it.

My truck is bombed quite a bit more than this truck, and I don't have near the EGT issues this one does, and like I said, the problem seems to be "new," since the turbo failure?

Any ideas?

It doesn't sound out of the ordinary to me. I can hit 1300 easily with the pmax off. What kind of boost numbers are you seeing. The egts' should level out some around 30 psi when towing.

Maybe blowing up the last turbo got some oil on the IAT sensor... check it out, cleaning it has made a difference...

next step

Thanks for the advice. I'll be pulling the MAP and AIT sensors and cleaning them. I also got the same advice from PDR. Also, I will be re-checking all intake and exhaust bolts. I hope it's something simple.

Party: I really don't want to put a larger exhaust housing on. The 14 waste gated is really $$, and I don't think it will help that much. The 16 non-waste gated will likely cause too much lag on the auto. I'm running it on my 98 and I love it, but I'm running a hotter fueling box, and other goodies.

First I'll check the easy stuff, then I'll move on towards exhaust and exhaust housings... .

The odd thing is that before the other turbo shelled out, the truck didn't have this problem. I mean, you could peg 1400-1500 if you kept your foot in it all the way up to redline in OD with the box on, but by then your running 125 mph. Now, it pegs in 2nd gear, and doesnt' want to cool much on the 2-3 shift. On the 3-OD shift, it just gets worse.

Yup. Checked all the boots as the first step. The truck has no boost guage, so I'm in kinda the dark on that question. There seems to be no apparent loss of power, though. I've blown a boot on my truck a couple times, and it was easy to tell, funny sound, no power, high temps.

I've also been told that there may be some turbo junk in the exhaust system from the old turbo... it really let go. Could be clogging the stock muffler.

Aeroturbine.

How much is this little thing? All I know is if it does what it says I am interested in one. However I have a felling that it is going to get pricy. Just curious and tired of $95 noise tickets. :D

The cheapest way to go is to remove the resonator and the muffler. That cooled my turbo enough. If that doesn't work well enough then you can always start spending more on other fangled solutions.
