Hi, I just installed a #10 plate and a 3000 GSK spring kit from pdr and my EGTs are reaching 1,500 degrees when i floor it. My boost gauge says 32 lbs. of boost when i floor it also. Is it safe to run these kinds of temperatures or how should i try to lower it? Also how high can i go on egts and still not damage the motor?

John

If no one has said yet, welcome to the TDR! :)

Would it be safe to assume that your thermocouple is in the manifold (pre-turbo)? 1500* is to much. 1250* would be better. When I only had the #10 plate, I never saw over 1050* in the manifold. May need to adjust the boost elbow, if you installed the one that came with plate (or is supposed to). I have no idea how much boost I was making at the time, because I pegged the 30# gauge I had before the 60# gauge. It was enough that the turbo bearings said NO!. Caught it before the turbo let go.

Put some 1" holes in the bottom part of the air filter housing (below the filter) to help get more air in there. I put on a BHAF, and that brought the temps down about 50-60*. May need to put on a bigger turbine housing.

I see you axed the muffler, but did the Cat run away also? Could be causing a restriction, from being plugged.

I would recommend bigger turbine housing and intake setup afe or whatever you like as long as it is not k&n and 1500 not good prolonged use will damage turbo and cylinder head and possibly pistons

1500 deg. , don't do it for more than a few seconds, passing someone, 1/4 mile that type thing. It's not good anytime, but most folks get away with crazy temps for a short time.

For prolonged pulls with the thermocouple preturbo, 1200, 1250 tops on pre turbo, post turbo 900 or so for long pulls.

You may benefit from more air to lower temps, if using the stock filter housing, pull the boot/adaptor between the fender and the housing. Also as suggested above, a few holes in the bottom, and back of the filter housing will help increase air flow.

A BHAF will likely filter better and flow as well or better than your K&N according to many posts by those that have run both.

And finally, my best advise it to back out of it if the temps exceed 1250.

Good luck, RJR

Ok i drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the airbox and i took the boot/adapter out and i still see temperatures around 1500. All my friends say get a new turbo will this lower my egts and how much would it lower them? What is the best turbo for the money, i want something that won't put that big of a hole in my wallet?

John

Big price difference.

A BHAF will only set you back 50-60 while a PDR HX35 is what 500-600... .

Where are you from? Elevation wise? What do you use your truck for? You shouldn't see those temps empty? Do you still have your cat like someone asked above?

I would try a BHAF that good for 50-100 depending on rpm or if you want to spend more a Scotty 2 should lower them by 150. A bigger 14 or 16 housing should be good for 100-200. You would be right around the safe mark then.

And what do you mean when you say, "my EGTs are reaching 1,500 degrees when i floor it. " From what speed to what speed?

This may sound dumb but what's a BHAF?

I'm from Ames, Iowa; right around sea level; I only use my truck to drive to college and back which is about 40 miles round trip; ya i do see those temps empty but i am racing it; I still have the cat on.

When I start from a dead start and floor the truck the egts will instantaneously rise and when i hit about 60 mph they approach 1500 degrees and will stay there until i back out.

Is a BHAF like an AFE air filter or something? I just called PDR and they want $950 for an HX-35 with a 14 cm housing. They want $775 for a remanufactured HX-35 with a 14 cm housing and I have to send my core back. The diesel shop who put my #10 plate in said they positioned the plate in the same place as the stock plate, is this too far ahead or should i set it back a little further?

John

All depends how much power you are willing to give up for the plate position and how much you want to use that power, also how much you are willing to spend to get the egts down.

A BHAF is a big honking air filter, it is similar to what big diesel engines run. Cheap, good filtration, and lowers egts. A scotty 2 will help more but a BHAF would be worth trying. Do you have to have a Cat to pass emisions? If not yank it out and put in straight pipe. They often time become pluges creating back pressure and raising egts.

IMO I would wait on the turbo you should be able to get you temps down with dropping the cat, BHAF or similar.

Do you plan on doing anymore to the truck (injectors, DV's, sliding plate all the way forward?) If so what?

How is your stock auto holding? Is the TQ converter slipping yet?

I would spend money on your transmission before a $900 turbo. Stock autos don't like much more power than stock.

The truck has 221,000 miles on it so i was just gonna leave the plate in the same spot. I would spent up to a $1,000 but no more. I just left the cat on to keep the noise down. The transmission shifts excellent and has never slipped yet. So what would you do, just take the cat off?

John

Leave it in the same spot then.

Buy a BHAF and a plate to block the heat from the turbo. (50-100 degrees) $60-$80 Or Scotty 2 $240 (100-150)

Take the cat out and but a decent no restrictive muffler in to keep sound down(at least 50 but maybe 100) $200 or so

Valve body to boost line pressure. Will help you transmission last. ($250+)

I think you truck has a HY turbo if so put in a used HX 12CM housing (came stock on manuals) as you can't upgrade the housing on yours. Should be able o find a nice one for $200-$300. (EGTS down another 100)

I would try that. Should help out quite a bit.

Where do i find a BHAF? I want to put one in. I think my turbo is close to being shot because when i raced a truck today, i held it at 1500 degrees for about 8 seconds and when i was done i could smell something funny in the cab. It almost smelled like something got to hot.

John

The BHAF can be had at Napa under part number 2790 for about $50. If you do a search on "BHAF" you will find lots of manufacturers and part numbers that are all basically the same filter. I would atleast do that and get rid of the cat and the muffler also. I would be a little easier on it untill you get some airflow improvements or you will be spending a lot more than $1000. :D

Get ride of the muffler and cat. Get a BHAF and don't bother with the heat shield unless its free. Then save like 125 bucks and get a 16cm Non Wastgated turbo housing for your turbo. It will go faster and cool it down a LITTLE. Then get a bigger turbo. Watch the " for sale page' hear on TDR and get a gently used HX-40 don't spend more than 650 for it. OR move your right foot off the pedal a little.
