I spoke to the diesel tech where I am. He told me that the high idle could be activated on the manual transmission with the addition of a $30 part. It is scheduled to go in this week. I chose this option as this is my first diesel though I have been fixing my own trucks since I started driving. I just thought it better to not fool with it and worry about the dealer trying to take away my warranty should I have an issue in the future.

I would be interested in the part number as well. I bought the high idle clutch switch through Cummins and it cost me about $100. The same kit through DC was about $300. I would be interested in knowing if there was another route to go without just grounding the wire to the chassis.

The truck went in on Monday and they installed the piece that they said it needed. I guess it did not ship with the pigtail it needed so another $35 in parts. It goes back in tomorrow but they still tell me the total bill including labor will be $105. 00. I am now up to $65 in parts. I will let you know when it comes out.

High Idle is in the 6. 7 Pickup and the Chassis Cab feature set, HOWEVER, it is a dealer activated option. The better dealers do not charge for the activation others do. It is a worth while feature as the manual states the engine is not to be idled. The high idle feature once enabled is set by the cruse control and set (in park) to the desired RPM (1100-1500) using the resume / accelerate button. When it is cold and the Engine brake is on it can sound quite loud at times as the EB cycles on an off to bring the engine up to operating temperature more quickly. When waiting at a very long traffic light or waiting for a very long train, slip it into high idle or shut the engine off. The high idle plus EB can really annoy some people so use it at your discretion.

All right. I just got my truck back and the high idle works very nicely. As courierdog said above, it is a bit loud with the exhaust break on. I love it!

The total bill including just over an hour of labor and the tax of the great state of New York was $156. 97. The parts amounted to about $66 of that and number are listed as follows:

5026273AB Switch-clutch starter int $31. 63

5102412AA wiring $34. 38

That is it. I did not have enough light when I got home to take a looksie to see the gear but I will tomorrow in the light. I have got to hand it to the tech at the shop here becuase I was prepared to spend the $300 on parts ( not including the labor) to get the thing working. He said that he could get it done for less and he did.

Just had my high idle turned on at the dealer and I love it, since I get very cold weather where I live. I did notice after the dealer did that and the recall flash, it dosen't seem like there is as much towing power as there was before. Like the high idle though.

OK I have been looking for the wire that needs to be grounded. I cannot find it anywhere. I have a cab and chassis. I did find a Green wire run to a non used cconnection, Looks like it is the same plug that would plug into the brake switch. Any help would be great. Getting cold at night here and I want to be able to use this feature

starscan instructions: for high idle using the cruise control:

ecu view> pcm> misc. functions> idle up feature enable> start> next> next> enable> next> finish

I had to provide instructions to the dealer to get it done on my '08 manual trans, they 1st said it couldn't be done... so gave them the instructions... was charged $50... . and told to find the green wire with orange tracer myself

Did eventually find the green wire with orange tracer - also note it has maybe 1/2" black shrink wrap on the end of it - hard to find and not much room to ground it - but worked.

Well, I had my truck in for an oil change. I provided the Starscan instructions to the dealer. They said it can't be done. The dealer called the Starscan help line. They said it cannot be done on my truck. It's a 2010. Something is different.
If anyone with a 2010 manual transmission can provide instructions to turn on high idle, please let me know.

WHere is this wire? Thats all you have to do is ground the wire and have the dealer tech do the Starscan fix?

Ken

Looked yesterday on a 2010 with latest wi-Tech diagnostic software and both high idle and enable exhaust brake are gone. StarScan will not work on a 2010 unless you tell it the truck is a 2009, and then it might not work anyway. Didn't try, but will when I get a chance. Sent a note up to the STAR guys to ask what's going on.

Where is the wire? under dash in vicinity of the emergency brake... along with about a thousand other wires... . I got a picture of it off the internet somewhere or else I'd have given up.

Best I can do for yah is say google the following: picture of cummins 6. 7 ground wire high idle - you should get a cummins forumn site, a member there (bthanks) posted a good picture on 11/4/10

good luck

ox1; You will see the MPG on the overhead roll back pretty quick on HI.

I asked my dealer to enable the cruise control option for HI and he refused saying he couldn't do it. BUT... to my suprise the truck does it itself automatically ... bumps rpm up to 1000-1100 rpm after idling at 700 for about one minute. I would rather have the manual control for this via the cruise control buttons but what the heck.
