I noticed this yesterday, and don't recall anyone else pointing this out before. High idle mode is apparently not a function of engine coolant temperature. After a long highway drive I was sitting in the truck (with it idling) waiting for the wife to come out mof the store. After 2 minutes sitting there, the engine went to high idle. Note I never shut the truck off... we pulled in, she got out and went inside, and I sat there idling. Conditions were as follows:
Ambient temperature: 27*F
Engine Coolant Temp: 187*F
Intake air temperature: 57-59*F
I was pleasantly surprised.
I believe it's a function of intake air temperature only.
