Had the cold weather high idle TSB done for the second time on my truck the other day. It never worked the first time, even though the parameters would have been met several times last winter. I suspect that the first time the update was loaded but never enabled.

My question is: how long after starting the truck will it take for the RPMs to start to increase and how long does it take to increase from idle to the 1200rpms?

Also does this work with a remote starter? I was thinking about getting one this year.

Thanks in advance

To answer your first question, it does take a while to ramp up. This is to make sure the oil pressure is up and what not. Usually, by the time I get sick and tired of waiting in the cab for it to happen, get out and walk 10 feet, I can start to hear the change in RPM. I would imagine elapsed time to be something like 20-30 seconds, which feels like eternity when you are freezing your cajones off.

Second question: You bet it works with a remote starter. It sure helps with the aforementioned problem!;)

There has been talk that the outside air temp sensor sometimes needs to be replaced due to faulty readings. If it is off, it won't engage the high idle until real low temps if at all.

What do you mean by "it was loaded, but never enabled"? I had the TSB performed last winter to no avail. It was COOLD here in CT last winter, well inside all required parameters for idle to ramp up, but it never has. Worth it to do a second reflash?

Thanks

Tim

First off, if the truck is plugged in the high idle will not actuate. Second, go to dodgeram.org and find the high idle TSB, near the bottom of the description it talks about going into another part of the DRB III and enabling the high idle. They never enabled mine the first time and I had to listen to insults about not knowing what I was talking about from the tech and the service manager until they would finally listen long enough for me to show the tech how to turn it on. He was pretty humble after that and in the end they did it for nothing since I was out of warranty period and they originally wanted $89 just to hook up the DRB. Of course I didn't gloat any!!!!!

Thanks guys for the responses.

"loaded but not enabled" means that they did not go back in with the DRBIII scan tool to enable the function, see the above posts.

Thanks

Not turning it on seems the norm. I'm sorry if I seem bitter, but everytime I read a thread about this, I hear about a tech not "turning it on". What does it take to get a service tech or Dodge to understand how to do this? I had the same experience of them not believing what I was talking about, and then having to prove it (thank you TDR)

Where is the outside air temp sensor located (and any ideas on checking it?) I have had this mod for a whole winter and it almost never comes on (unless it is real cold ((single digits or the truck has set for several days)). It may not get "real" cold in the Sierras of California (compared to the northeastern part of the US), but it should get cold enough to run the modification at start up... . (by the way, Truckee, in the heart of the Sierras, is often the coldest spot in California, if not the nation... )
