I was just thinking about the old F*rd/IH 7. 3L IDI engines... (I think the 5. 7L/6. 2L and mechanical injection 6. 5L GM's had 'em too... . )

They had a 'fast idle' solenoid on 'em - perhaps a little research on that part could yield a good solenoid for high idle use..... just in case anyone doesn't want a 'gasser' part on their truck... . especially off a "Quadra-bog". :-laf

I saw this thread and got inspired. I have been wanting a high idler for a long time. I just went to my local junkyard late this afternoon and got a high idle solenoid off of a Motorcraft 2 barrel carburetor. It has a threaded shank with a jam nut for easy adjustment. I built a bracket and installed it using one of the front timing cover bolts and wired it to a lighted toggle pulling power off of my accessory fuse block. It works great and was real simple and only cost about $10.

I bought the cable from AW Direct as shown in one of the above posts. I than mounted the knob in the cigarette ligter hole. (dont smoke and still have power port) It is a perfect fit. I than ran the cable to the Injection pump. I cut it to the right length mounted it though on of the holes im the Throttle bracket. Than I use the chain supplied in the kit to hook to throttle lever. Put some RTV or silicone where ti cable mount to engine or you will get significant engine noise in cab.

Works great. On a cold morining I give it three full turns ( will vary depending on install) and she idles at a constant 1000. The reason I installed it was for cold starts. When Cold the pedal is hard to press and I would get a high rev, not good for cold engine. Than I would quickly let off and it would stall. With the new cable - nice controlled starts.

I have also used it as cruise control on very low traffic night driving. It isnt the safest, but once you are comfortable with it all you have ot do is push th knob in and it returns to idle. Since engine does not compensate for hills truck will slow and speed up. But consistent fuel flow gives unbelievable mileage!!

I have been doing this also for years and I really think its what lets me get great mileage. I have 1 24 valve and thought I had heard once that a 12 valve would maintin a rpm for any given throtle seting but you are saying that it will let rpm vary. That is what you want for max mileage to free wheel down hills and then let your momentum carry you up the next. Man one day I got to get a 12 valve and put a throttle cable on it and see if I can bust 30MPG. Have you ever doen a trip and went slow to see what kind of mileage you could get?

No, I have never done a trip at say 60-65 MPH for 500 plus miles. I always seem to set it at 70 which gets me 75 on down hills and 65 on up hills.

I have on board air. So I used an air cylinder off an Ingersol-Rand air compressor controlled by a soleniod air valve.
