With 261,470 miles I am in need of a few repairs.

1. Radiator - The tank on the driver side has a crack in it. (Factory Original)

2. Hydro-Boost is leaking from the weep hole underneath (Factory Original)

3. Rear axle seal and probably the internals (Factory Original)

4. Starter is now "clicking" sometimes (Factory Original)

Yes all of these are Original items, and I know I have had a lot of good luck in the life span, but WOW! all four within 3 weeks!!!

All i want is to make these repairs and get another 225,000 miles out of her before a major rebuild.

Any tips / comments are welcomed and appreaciated.

Dave

P. S. the trans is all factory except a pressure transducer and pressure sending unit.

The starter problem is most likely the contacts. You can get the good ones from Geno's. I'm amazed that the stock ones lasted over 260,000 miles though--you must do a whole lot of long distance highway driving.

Not a whole lot I can comment on for the other stuff.

I can say wow to the starter lasting that long. not uncommon with the parts that you have mentioned. the radiator either look local at your radiator shops and compare the pricing compared to internet. this will be good to replace. do the the hoses same time. check your pullies on the front since it will be removed. water pump. check this. you can pull it since fluid is going to be drained. check it see if it is still turning right. hydroboost. looked at one the other day from napa more of a pain to change not to pricey. but www.genosgarage.com has a rebuild kit for the starter. bigger plunger and contacts, also a rebuild kit for the alternator as well. hope this helps some.

The starter kit from Geno's is pretty impressive. My 99' was clicking at 106k and the contacts were worn pretty thin. I changed out the contacts on a buddy's 01' with 110k and they were almost worn completely through. The new contacts are double the size and should never have to be replaced again. Larry B's website sells them as well along with the wrench and instructions to make install a breeze.

My OEM starter lasted to 135K. I purchased an Auto Zone life time warranty replacement starter and it is still working fine at 337K. The AC clutches typically bit the dust as well before 200K. The AC compressors are little tanks, I'm still on the original unit.

As suggested, get the water pump while your in there. Cheap, like $80 esh bucks and simple to change (2 bolts)

The rear axle seal surprises me? Fortunately, to date I have had no problems. While your fixin stuff, check the front drive shaft u-joints carefully... . if the go out at 70 mph it's a major event and the transfer case may not survive. This is an item that requires maintenance BEFORE they fail.

The issues always seem to come all at once. You may go another 100K before the gremins show up again!

I agree whith the others in replacing the contacts. I waisted $350. 00 at Dodge years age because I didn't know I could just change the contacts.

I would also do the following:

Thermostat (cummins only)

Radiator cap

serp belt (Goodyear gatorbacks have been the only ones that don't chirp)

carrier bearing

new water pump (keep the old one in the truck as a spare)

Thanks guys.

I replaced the water pump back in Jan. 09. Should be good there.

Did front U-joints ate 212,000 miles. Theyare good.

I will replace the three rear U-joints along with the carrier bearing.

The starter problem was a loose battery connection. Amazing !!!

And DIESELWRKS I am a one man lawn care company with 50 + customers, so I don't drive alot of long distances.

Crazy I know.

You still need to put new contacts in your starter, you could fry your fuel cutoff solenoid if the contacts weld themselves to the plunger . Larry'b or genos sells the contacts and plunger about 1 1/2 hr to save big bucks.
