my neighbor lady [hotshoter] has a '03 3500 flat bed HO NV5600 with 325000+ miles. She had it serviced at Blumenthals in OK City. They also recommended she run additional 2 qts over for the bearing starvation problem from heavy haulers mostly in the mountains. Shes about to retire the '03 for a 3500 6. 7 CR truck but wants the manual G56.

What does she haul?

233K so far so good..... put in a SB con OFE at 68k due to HP upgrades only, changed stock fluid to 7qts. Red Line MTL and 8oz. of prolong tran. treatment, also added the FAST COOLERS to the PTO covers.

... . i would have to check my book, don't remember the miles that i switched the transmission fluid, but it was the ONLY time... . so i would have to say MOST of the 233k is on the current fluid... ... good luck, tom;)

Overfill them 1-2 qts. I use Amsoil here in the shop, unless the customer wants the factory fluid. I service a few horse haulers. One lost one at 125k (before I started servicing it) and the other truck was traded in at 170K+ with just a new clutch. I had been servicing that truck for about 100k miles with Amsoil and 1 extra quart.

... just got back from pulling my 5'er to Morris,IL. and back, the transmission started making noise on the return trip in W. VA,just before Washington,Pa. . found it was low on fluid,so we put somewhere between 3-4 qts. in and by the time i got to Frederick,Md. the noise was all but gone..... it STILL tries to jump out of 1st gear sometimes,i'm gonna pull the PTO cover, clean the magnet and bottom of pan as best as i can, refill with Pennzoil i guess, and be on the lookout for a new or rebuilt unit... . i have NO idea what the prices run... but its time to make a change out i think... . rebuild or replace... . i'll let ya'll know..... tom

I will only tell you one thing about overfilling with more than a quart...

I'm currently running just shy of nine quarts of Redline MTL... it is just short of the top PTO cover bolt with the Fast Coolers (it actually was running out of the fill plug in the fast coolers).

Running normal fill, the transmission runs cooler and temperatures reacts quicker to loads/speed. Running overfull, the trans runs HOTTER and temperatures react slower. With normal fill, I ran around 160*F at 80*F ambient... with it overfull, I run 210*F to 215*F at 80*F.

I have seen this with two fills of Redline (one without the fast coolers) and a fill of RP... this isn't a one-time thing I have seen. It will immediately change (return to "normal") if you drain the excess fluid. I'm not sure if the fluid is pulling heat from a previously hot-running part, or if the oil is just heat soaking.

I currently have 130k on my NV5600... fluids drain clean almost everytime... I will continue to run overfull.

Make sure you are sitting down when you get a price!!! And try to check whatever shop you use for quality... seems to be not too many shops around that can build one correctly the first or second time around.

The NVG 5600 in my '01 began a grinding sound at 302k miles. I took it to Standard Transmission and Gear (approx the right name) in Fort Worth, TX. It cost appoximately $2,000 for complete rebuild and a new clutch assembly including all labor to remove and reinstall. They are or were a TDR advertiser and really good people. They only charge for the actual parts required for your individual transmission and will take you back to the rebuilder's bench and show you the parts required and explain the reason they are needed.

I realize that Fort Worth, TX is a long way from your home and it would be expensive to have it shipped to them and back but sometimes it is worth the cost of shipping to have a repair done by a very experienced, skilled, and honest rebuilder. Blumenthals in Oklahoma City is another one who is a TDR advertiser and a friend and fellow transporter has said very good things about.

342K+ and loving my six-spd. one oil-change a 120K, none since. No sync's in 5 and 6, but just double clutch it. It's an '01, 4X4 with 285/16's.

i burnt mine up around 132000, and i got 25k on my new one, i am about to go buy some oil and change it out. cant afford another one

400 000 Km before my syncros went burned up stock clutch at 20 000Km, Burned up a Con FE after another 300 000km the last 80 000Km with a SB3700 DD this was all hard miles running 500 plus HP. Always ran it 1 liter overfull. If you idle your truck lots 2nd gear usually goes. The over filling keeps some oil splashing on 2nd gear while idling.
