High Mileage

My 1994 Cummins Ram 2500 was totaled in a head-on collision. I am looking at a 1995 Cummins 2500 Ex-cab but it has 225,000 miles on it. My question concerns the mileage, is this excessive for a Cummins? At what point does the Cummins start to lose compression? Any input to help me make my decision would be greatly appreciated.

Just my opinion. That doesn't seem to be excessive miles. I have 255,000 now with excellent oil samples and no problems. A friend has a 92 with 400,000+ and a 97 with 300,000+. I believe the key is MAINTENANCE. I would rather buy a truck with high mileage and excellent maintenance records than low mileage and abused.

Sorry about your loss!

An unmaintained Cummins could well start losing compression at 40K miles. A well-maintained Cummins can run for 800,000 to 1,000,000 miles. As used in our application (Dodge Ram), the engine is so detuned, that it should last nearly forever if it is maintained.

So, check the maintenance records for the truck. If it was treated well, you should expect to get a couple hundred K more miles out of it.

Make sure this one wasn't in a acident!
The 300,000 to 500,000 advertising Dodge does in its brochures are the for Med Duty Trucks class 5,6,7, some 8's. (major engine work)
If taken care of the engine could be your last one you have to buy.
